Our Culinary Journey
Raw Platter with Oysters, Kingfish, and Salmon: The seafood was incredibly fresh, a true testament to the kitchen’s commitment to quality. I had the choice of oysters and opted for two ponzu and two natural, each offering a unique taste experience. The ponzu oysters were tangy and refreshing, while the natural oysters allowed the pure, briny flavour to shine. Each bite was a burst of oceanic flavour, beautifully presented with edible flowers that added a delicate touch.
Fried Lotus Root with Spiced Aioli: These crispy delights were paired with a spiced aioli that offered just the right amount of kick, making them a perfect start to our meal.
Scorched Beef with Cucumber, Pickle, and Sichuan Aioli: This dish was a standout with tender beef, complemented by the refreshing crunch of cucumber and the tang of pickles. The Sichuan aioli added a pleasant heat that tied all the elements together.
Bang Bang Chicken with Soba Noodles and Sesame Seeds: A harmonious blend of flavours and textures, the chicken was succulent, and the soba noodles provided a delightful, chewy contrast. Sesame seeds added a nutty finish that was simply delightful.
Fried Wagyu with House-Made Chilli Oil and Black Vinegar: The wagyu was cooked to perfection, with a crispy exterior and a juicy, flavourful interior. The house-made chilli oil and black vinegar provided a sophisticated balance of heat and acidity.
Pork Belly with Sweet Soy: This dish was indulgent and satisfying. The pork belly was tender, with a perfectly rendered fat layer that melted in the mouth. The sweet soy glaze was rich and umami-packed, elevating the dish further.
Crunchy Morton Bay Bug with Gem Lettuce and Jalapeno Aioli: The Morton Bay bug was a treat, crispy and flavourful. The gem lettuce provided a fresh crunch, while the jalapeno aioli added a spicy kick that was well-balanced and delicious.
Honey Ginger Chicken with Char-Grilled Broccolini: A wonderful combination of sweet and savoury, the honey ginger chicken was succulent, and the char-grilled broccolini added a smoky depth that was thoroughly enjoyable.
Teriyaki Beef Fillet with Wok-Fried Vegetables: This dish was another highlight, featuring a tender beef fillet glazed with a rich teriyaki sauce. The wok-fried vegetables were perfectly cooked, retaining their crispness and vibrant colours. The combination of the savoury beef and fresh vegetables created a balanced and satisfying dish that was both comforting and delicious.
Throughout the evening, our server, Tiarne, was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, adding significantly to the overall positive experience. Her recommendations were spot-on, and her warm demeanour made us feel genuinely welcome. The presentation of each dish was nothing short of artistic, with vibrant colours and thoughtful garnishes that made the meal visually stunning.

Read morehave never given a less than 5 star review which makes this one a bit sad to write. My group consisted of 4 people and we made our booking a week in advance. We were first seated at a table in the corner of the restaurant that honestly needs to be cornered off, there was mould on the ceiling and water consistently leaking. We asked to change seats as there were multiple free four seater tables nearby - it was a big challenge to move tables but we then got seated at a table next to the door way. On a rain free and wind free night this table would be fine but it was pissing down and howling wind through the doorway. We were a bit upset to have been seated here and asked if we could move to one of the other free tables out of the rain/wind and away from the mould riddled roof.
We actually had a table full of women nearby comment and say that it was a bit silly how they weren’t letting us sit at the table next to them that was free. We went back and forth with waiters asking to move and they were just messengers for the manager. The manager didn’t speak to us themself, only sent the waiters back and having worked in an environment very similar, I know by the second complaint I would’ve encouraged the manager to speak to the customers themself. We didn’t really get an apology for the inconvenience or anything like that. I understand it’s a busy restaurant and it was booked out but that is no excuse for lack of communication and poor problem solving these two tables should probably be taken out of the floor plan as the restaurant is quite squishy and I think they need to space out the back area a bit more anyways.
We then ordered the food and the only reason this review is a three is because the food did partially make up for it. We ordered the edamame, lotus root chips, popcorn cauliflower, salt and pepper chilli squid, chicken satay sticks, chicken karaage bao buns and the pad see ew. All was great for the price point but as someone from over the border, I wouldn’t travel up here again to eat the food was good but not amazingly great.
We got some cocktails as well - the watermelon long island was definitely the winner of the night and the cherry sour was good but I think the gin used wasn’t an amazing match for the rest of the taste of the cocktail - still yummy though!
Overall the night was nice was the table mishap was sorted but if it was resolved quicker and maybe someone apologised for having us move twice, it wouldn’t have left such a sour taste in my mouth :(
And for those that may read this thinking “what a Karen” - I NEVER leave reviews unless they are a 5 but this was just a bit of a shocker that I’d like to spread the message and maybe implore people to choose another...
Read moreI’ve never posted a review before but felt compelled after my experience last night.
For some context I booked this restaurant (based on a friend’s recommendation) for a suprise post proposal dinner, i.e. my partner thought we would just be having a dinner with just us two, I had made this clear on the booking notes and called the restaurant the day before to inform them of this also.
The night started poorly when the greeter who showed us to our table ruined the suprise by telling us at the entrance that the other guests were already here…. I would have thought that stating this in the booking notes and calling in advance would have been sufficent to inform staff to keep a minimum amount of discretion, but I can understand that at a busy restaurant individual requests can sometimes be missed, however, this poor level of service would not be an isolated incident.
With a party of 7 we opted for the street. After a fairly lengthy wait we recieved our first entree, I can understand that delays are to be expected in a busy restaurant but what wasn’t quite excusable was that our lotus chip appetisers and drinks did not arrive until about the third entree was served. This disorganisation was further emphasised when our fried rice came out almost 20mins before our lamb shank curry dish. This poor service capped off when was waiter came out to tell us that the dessert we ordered was too small to be shared. What is the point of charging per head if you can’t cater for the number of people. In general all dishes seemed to be quite a tight share for the 7 people. General poor service was also part and parcel of the night like forgetting to bring replacement utensils when requested.
The food itself was quite average with a couple of highlights.
The kingfish sashimi and mushroom Bao were great, however there was not much else to write home about. The karage chicken and duck pancake was just fine. The fried rice was very oily and this was not helped with the sub par lamb shank curry coming about 20mins after the rice was served. The dessert we changed to was a black sesame ice cream with fired donuts, this was also quite nice.
With food alone I would have given the restaurant maybe a 3 but with expetionaly poor service in combination with the very steep prices, hideaway left both a figurative and literal bad taste in my mouth, not a great way to end what was such a lovely day...
