As the name suggests- all things curry! Curry rice and different variations of curry filled bread - highly recommend the cereal crusted wagyu bun and keema (minced meat) curry bun.
Back to check out Kare Night menu- a selection of small dishes only available from 5pm. They have also expanded their curry bread and curry rice options, making way for some new crowd favourites!
🍵 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐜𝐚𝐤𝐞 ($9.3) - strawberry and matcha combo with a swirl of sweet cream. 🥜 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐨 “𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭”($7.7) - soy bean latte, a nutty roasty flavour similar to freshly roasted peanuts or almonds.
Kare Night Specials (from 5pm) 🥚 𝐔𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐢 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐤𝐢 ($13.9) - egg omelette rolled with grilled eel 🥑 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐘𝐮𝐤𝐤𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝 ($16.7) - garlic wasabi soy 🍆 𝐍𝐚𝐬𝐮 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐨 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐞 ($10.5)
The caramelised brulee eggplant was our favourite, but the taste of the yuzu miso was quite mild. The yukke salad was fresh, okra provided some crunchy texture against the tuna and avocado.
CURRY PAN 🍤 𝐄𝐛𝐢 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐧 ($12.5) 🍞 𝐘𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐛𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐧 ($9)
Previously tried their signature keema (minced pork) pan and wagyu curry pan, great options if you want their curry rice in bread form. Ebi curry pan coated in crunchy croutons with a striking piece of prawn katsu poking out of the bread definitely caught my eye. It also delivered in taste, filled with curried tartar sauce. You can also get yakisoba (Japanese stir fried noodles) in bread form, strands of wagyu sausage stir fry egg noodles hidden within. It was a perfect blend of sweet, savoury and tangy from the yakisoba sauce, mayo, seaweed and bonita flakes and red ginger.
CURRY RICE 🥩 𝐖𝐚𝐠𝐲𝐮 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐢 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐮 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐲($26.5) - panko wagyu mince, mozzarella, 🐽 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐮 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐲($26)
The new wagyu menchi katsu curry is my new favourite! Crispy panko crumbed wagyu mince meatballs with melted mozzarella, all drenched in KARE’s original wagyu curry gravy. The pork neck was also a good option, I would add an egg on the side if I were to reorder. Fukujinzuke (Japanese style pickle) and onion-bulb pickles were slightly tangy with a lovely crunch, perfect accompaniment to the curry.
CAKES 💚 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐀𝐧𝐤𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐤𝐞 ($8) 🤎 𝐇𝐨𝐣𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐤𝐞 ($8)
They have also added more cakes and sweet bread options! Matcha lovers will love the matcha cake with sweet red bean paste filling and topped with a drizzle of matcha milk cream, while I wish the hojicha flavours were stronger in the...
Read moreKare is a newly opened cafe specialising in Japanese curry located right next to Queen Vic Market. They have a huge variety of different curry options, side dishes, drinks, curry pans, desserts and definitely the biggest range of Japanese curry options I’ve seen in Melbourne. We tried the-
▪️VEGAN CHICKEN KATSU CURRY ($23.00) panko vegan chicken, KARÉ original curry, rice, fukujinzuke, onion-bulb pickles ▪️VEGAN CURRY ($19.00) KARE original curry, renkon, okra, pumpkin, capsicum, eggplant, rice, fukujinzuke, onion- bulb pickles ▪️VEGETARIAN CURRY PAN ($8) ▪️ANKO MOCHI PAN ($8) red bean mochi ▪️MATCHA MOCHI COOKIE ($5.90) ▪️HOJICHA MOCHI COOKIE ($5.50) ▪️TUNA YUKKE SALAD ($16.70) tuna, okra, avocado, nori, sesame, garlic wasabi soy ▪️ICHIGO ICED SPRITZ ($8.00) strawberries and sparkling tonic ▪️MATCHA LATTE ($8.00)
The curry was good, it was tangy and zesty with a stronger onion flavour, and less sweet compared to the ones I’m used to. The mock chicken schnitzel was really good, had great textures and would recommend this if you’re looking for a plant based option! They do sell out of particular items quick but the variety is huge (so many mock meats, vegan options, and meat options (ofc) including rice, udon, cookies, and side dishes and all things curry) so there’s heaps to choose from regardless.
I quite liked the side dishes we got. Most notably the vegetarian curry pan, with carrot mushroom onion filling, was our favourite and they nailed the flavours of that filling. The red bean one is also highly recommended, it was warm and the perfect texture- gooey and chewy on the inside and hot and crispy on the outside. The mochi cookies had district flavours and wasn’t too sweet.
The drinks were great too! So even if you’re not feeling like a full meal, they serve all your cafe style drinks (and also alcoholic beverages… aesthetic style 🫣). I really liked the ichigo strawberry, perfect amount of sweetness and it was tasty and complemented my meal well. Really cute cafe that’s worth visiting whether you’re craving some warm curry or just want to visit a cute...

⭐️ Signature Beef Curry ⭐️ Chicken Katsu Curry ⭐️ Beef Pan ⭐️ Pork Pan
Kare is a charming little cafe in West Melbourne (opposite @vicmarket) dedicated to its namesake. Japanese curry is a diverse culinary realm, with influences from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. Here they embrace the Euro-Style curry, reminiscent of a rich French beef stew curry, adding their own twist to the dish. 🍛
It is only now in its 4th week of trading, and is the brainchild of Akiko Asano, an interior designer renowned for her work on places like @tamurasakebar, @izakayabytamura and @theelysianwhiskybar. In the kitchen, the culinary magic is by consultant chef Ryo Kitahara. Although not on-site full-time due to his other projects, including an upcoming ramen bar, Ryo’s expertise ensures that Kare’s house-made original curries and delectable pastries maintain their exceptional quality. 👨🏼🍳
We started with a Sesame Iced Latte, our first ever, and were impressed by how well balanced it is, no flavour overwhelmed. The coffee is sourced from Wide Open Road. I also tried one of Tina’s sparkling teas which I’ve started popping up everywhere, very refreshing.
I don’t think I could pick a favourite dish, they were all amazing. Both the Signature Beef Curry and Chicken Katsu Curry were big, bold and had a decent heat to it. The beef was tender and the chicken was beautifully crumbed and perfectly cooked. ⭐️
You must try their Curry Pan, with Pork, Beef, Vegetable or Anko Red Bean fillings. The bread itself is so crispy, yet fluffy inside and very slightly sweet. I actually wish I had a plain version to have with my curry. 😂
As they grow, they will be slowly expanding their menu and eventually be open for dinner, with a distinct menu and a selection of natural sakes. Really well done to the team, this was a very tasty...
