So, I happened upon this place called Borek in the South Melbourne Market. What drew me in was this long queue of folks waiting to order - had to see what was up! Right off the bat, I was stoked about the prices. You could snag a ricotta and cheese borek for just 5 bucks! They've got other stuff at around the same price too, so it's a total bargain. The day I dropped by, they were all out of everything but the ricotta and cheese borek. I grabbed one and it was pretty darn good - lots of filling and really tasty. They serve it up hot to warm-ish, which is totally my jam. Though a traditional borek is usually flaky pastry, this one was more like toasted bread. It was still yummy, but I reckon a side of yogurt would've made it even better. Not sure if they had it, or if I just didn't spot it. I also got to try the spicy lamb borek later, but that didn't really do it for me. It was a bit on the bland side and felt like I was eating more bread than meat. So here's the deal: Borek in South Melbourne Market is a top spot for cheap, tasty food to grab on the go. My tip? Stock up on a few extra to enjoy at home. While the spicy lamb borek wasn't my cup of tea, the ricotta and cheese one was a hit and I'd definitely say give it a go!

Until I arrived in Melbourne, I’d never heard of a Borek—and honestly, I’m convinced the rest of Australia is in on some kind of delicious secret. Why is this flaky, savory Turkish miracle not a national treasure? Oh right, because if any more people find out about it, the already ridiculous line at South Melbourne Market will stretch all the way to Tasmania. I heroically elbowed my way to the front (okay, I waited politely like everyone else, but it felt heroic) and scored the very last spicy lamb borek. Yes, the last one—cue dramatic music. Other options were available—lamb and cheese, chicken and mushroom, some leafy green thing for the salad-inclined—but I’m not here for vegetable regrets. Pro tip: one borek is enough to feed two moderately hungry adults, or one person with no shame and a deep respect for carbs. These things are hefty. Like, “cancel your dinner plans” kind of hefty. As for finding somewhere to sit and eat your prize? Good luck. It’s about as likely as finding someone who prefers decaf coffee or claims Adelaide tap water is “actually pretty good.” Was it worth the wait? Absolutely. Would I push a stranger aside to get another spicy lamb borek? I won’t say yes, but I also won’t say no.

$5 per borek Seating at food court I am a regular to this little shop. Quality borek with very reasonable pricing. A must have nibble every time going to South Melbourne Market. Bake fresh in house. My son loves the Spanish & Cheese. I always go for the spicy lamb and potato. Taste good and fresh every time. I usually share a borek with my husband as the bread is quite filling. Having a whole borek would take up most of my appetite for other goodies in the market! The line is always long but move quick. A must try little place in the market. A 5 star means I will go back for the quality and value.

This place is great. Fresh quality food every time we go. We come here every sunday to enjoy local food and support local business. However, it seems like they always trying to find ways to rip us off with change. For instance, everytime we go and get 2 boreks, we give her $10 note and the lady always offers a "special" deal and asked us to grab another pastry for $10 insteadof not find a way to and purchased a borek. Today, we went again and It was a different lady at the counter. We purchased 1 spinach and cheese borek and she said $4, we gave her $5 note. Instead giving our $1 change back, she said "next" and served next customer. So i asked "was it $5?" And she gave me the yes nod. We don't know if this happens to only us or other customers as well. It just feels very unfair. Today just felt like we were getting robbed. It is only small change, but imagine if they do that to 100 customers a day, they ripping about $100 off their own loyal customers. This is considered as stealing in a different manner. I hope when they see this, they realise and reflect their...
