I was on the hunt for a new restaurant to try and a colleague highly recommended Papion Bites – and wow, am I glad I listened!

Walking in, we were greeted straight away which was so nice and really made us feel welcome. The place itself looks great inside, really fresh and with a cool atmosphere that just makes you want to sit down and order everything.

Our server was lovely and talked us through the menu. They totally sold me on the Barramundi on rice, especially when they told us about the family secret recipe sauce and said, "you can try everything else anywhere but you can only get this here." I was not disappointed! It was a huge, beautifully seared barramundi fillet with this sauce that I could have just drunk on its own. So good.

I was so happy with the meal that I actually came back for lunch the very next day! This time I tried the slow-cooked lamb shank and it was melt-in-your-mouth tender. I'm not even exaggerating, I ended up eating it with a spoon because it just fell apart.

Before we left, we got to have a quick chat with the chef who was so nice and personable. He told us about their weekly specials, which sound awesome: they have a cocktail of the week for just $10 and on Tuesday nights after 5pm, it's Parma and chips/rice/mash for $10! I can't name another place in Melbourne that does that!

This place was brilliant. Not really knowing Melbourne or the lay of the land, we came in quite early as a family of 4 in order to eat before a show. Not only were they more than happy to serve us early, but they went above and beyond. The waiter Lucy engaged with our daughters on their level as she could clearly see how excited they were, but also judged well when to head back to the counter. On top of that, the food was excellent. I shared the BBQ pork ribs and red salad with my youngest. The portions were easily big enough, even for us country folk with country appetites. The pork ribs fell off the bone beautifully, so easily no knives were needed. Heck, even the mashed potato and the bit of green rice I stole from my husband's plate were good. The atmosphere was also great - quiet enough to chat about whatever you want, but with a touch of whimsy which meant there was always something to talk about should conversation flag.
