Despite mixed reviews I wanted try it as it looked funky and is only a 2 minute walk from my office.
I must admit that having seen it before and now eaten there, I'm a bit disappointed as I expected something different but what I experienced was bland food and typically arrogant Perth ambience.
I must jump in at this point and state that the staff were attentive and polite. My comment regarding typical Perth Arrogance is reflected to the management/owner who occupied four seats to do his work on his laptop whilst yapping on the phone. Those is the hospitality trade know better than to use their dining area as your own office.
As for the food, you're immediately told by the staff to ignore half the menu as one half is reserved for dinner, including the desserts.
OK. Fair enough. Let's concentrate on what's on offer - Ramen Noodles. I'm a fan of these dishes but unfortunately myself and my co diners were ambivalent at best - not horrid and not great at the same time. When asked by the polite waitress if I enjoyed it I commented that it was OK. She then asked in surprise "Only OK". T which I replied "Yeah. It was nothing to write home about".
Not expecting anything else from the waitress but thought it prudent to be honest without being rude.
The dƩcor is funky and interesting which is what is the draw for passing trade. Given the amount of places to now eat in Perth/Northbridge, you're going to have to do better.
Food that is OK can be easily be improved. The dƩcor need not change. The arrogance and unprofessionalism of the management/owner will be a bigger issue to rectify.
Remember, the majority of quirky new start ups don't last long if they can't get it right first time. There are plenty of To Let signs in...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreVery disappointing. Iāve been to Chanās countless times over the years and last night will be the last unless their team pulls it together. Previously you couldnāt book a table and Iād happily put my name on the waitlist and wait whatever the time may be. Last night we booked as a group of 6. Arrived at the time of our booking and was told they were running a little behind schedule, cool no worries. However, 45 minutes later after being told to āwait outsideā by a rude waiter was becoming a bit of a joke. After seeing us getting a little restless and other business literally walking away as they hadnāt even been greeted by a Chanās member, they opened the top level to āsqueeze us inā as if we were the inconvenience after having made a booking as per their system. Has Perth lost its hospitality? We were sure not made to feel welcome and the vibe from the staff was definitely not warm.... Onto the food - I had high hopes as Chanās was my favourite ramen joint for a long time and I went last night as I knew that their menu had had a revamp. The starters, popcorn chicken and lotus root chip - awesome! Good flavours, decent serving, we devoured them. Dumplings and boas also were tasty and left you wanting more. For me though, the reason I go to Chanās is the ramen. We ordered 3 different bowls to try the new broths and the only one which was half satisfying on the tastebuds was the one which accompanied the chicken. The rest were lifeless. You may think this review harsh, it probably is but when youāve had such a love affair with an establishment and to see their food and hospitality drop as it has. Itās pretty heartbreaking. Good luck Chanās, Iām not sure...
