Out of respect for the response to my review, I decided to give this place another shot. Honestly, to be fair to them, I’ll keep my prior review because it didn’t get better. The servers were pleasant, but the service was not any better. In fact, I asked to speak to the manager after waiting nearly 30 minutes for a salad and plan cheese burger. I introduced myself and stated based on the response to my latest review we decided to give the restaurant another chance. He was so disingenuous, and quite frankly he was aggravated, and he made excuses for everything. So, I said ok thanks for stopping by. The food was plain and flavorless. We leave soon, and will avoid this place like COVID. Prior experience: Such a great atmosphere, too bad the staff just don’t seem to care what this place represents. As Sydney’s oldest restaurant, one would think it would be an honor to work here. I would be honored, guess that’s what happens when your hire to hire, not hire someone who actually cares about the name and what it represents. We asked for hot sauce for the Nachos and were told they don’t have any. Then, we asked for Tabasco sauce, and were handed an empty bottle. We asked if they had more and were told obviously not of the bottle was empty. We said really and they brought something out.

Have eaten upstairs at the regular Fortune of War before but today a group of 3 dined next door at the 'Lockup' outside on the covered balcony. We were enjoying a drink and people watching but were constantly bothered by staff asking if we were going to order food. We hadn't been there for long and intended on having lunch but felt rushed into ordering food before we were ready. We asked if there was another booking for the table and the reply was no. Kitchen was busy pumping out meals for this venue and the one next door so we waited about 30min to be served which was fine. Chicken parmy ($29) was huge. Nice crumbed double chicken breast but the sugo was lacking in flavour. Chips were battered and very nice. Side salad nothing exciting and no dressing. Cheeseburger with fries ($23) was good value and well received. Salmon ($36) was a large protein portion and also liked. We moved on to another venue after finishing eating as we felt we weren't that welcome here to sit and talk and enjoy another wine. Maybe the staff need to chill out a bit more? The individual rooms inside were intimate private spaces / former cells. Cool vibe.

Some friends from home had mentioned that Sydney’s oldest bar was in The Rocks, so a couple of us ventured out to visit on a cold and rainy winter Saturday afternoon. Forget the awful weather - this place was packed! Tons of tourists and locals hanging around, eating, drinking, and engaged in lively conversation. I couldn’t imagine a better experience. Everyone was having a blast and not letting the day get them down. The bar stools seemed to house mainly regulars, with tourists occupying the standing room and high-top tables right behind them. No one waited too long for service, and the bartenders were happy to make suggestions. Make this a must-see when you’re in The Rocks, even if it’s just a quick stop. Nice to take in the history and feel such good energy.

A Lively Venue with Excellent Ambiance, Minor Areas for Improvement

I dined at Fortune of War many times and thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere it offers. The establishment consistently delivers excellent vibes, making it a wonderful place to unwind and socialize.

One of the standout features is the live music at the al fresco dining area, which significantly enhances the overall experience. The performances create a sense of unity among guests and add a delightful energy to the environment. It’s clear that great care has been taken to curate an engaging and enjoyable ambiance.

That said, when the venue is at full capacity, service can become somewhat challenging to navigate. Due to the high volume of patrons, staff attention is stretched thin, and guests may need to proactively seek assistance. Additionally, the space can feel quite crowded, making movement inside the bar difficult.

While the food quality is average, it is reasonably satisfying and pairs well with the overall experience. The focus here seems to be more on the atmosphere rather than dining, which may be perfectly fine for those prioritizing a fun night out.

Highlights: 🎵 Live music elevates the experience 🌿 Al fresco dining provides a pleasant setting ✨ Energetic and welcoming atmosphere

Areas for Improvement: ⏳ Service efficiency during peak hours 🚶 Space management to improve guest comfort 🍽️ Potential to enhance food offerings

Final Thoughts: Fortune of War is an excellent choice for those seeking a lively and entertaining dining experience. While there are minor operational challenges during busy periods, the overall ambiance and entertainment make it a worthwhile visit. I would happily return for the music and atmosphere, with the hope that service flow may improve in the future.

Recommendation: Ideal for group gatherings and casual outings. Consider visiting during slightly off-peak hours for a...

🍻 The Beer Line-Up

Fortune of War proudly offers 14 taps featuring a rotating mix of local and imported beers. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic Tooheys New, a Guinness, or something more adventurous, there’s something for every brewer’s palate . Pints galore, just like in the UK—full-size and full-flavor, which many visitors seem to love .

⸻

🐟 Fish & Chips (and more!)

If you’re here for the pub grub, the fish and chips are stellar—fresh, perfectly cooked, and properly portioned . One reviewer even called it “superb”! Portions are generous, so come hungry . Other dishes like steak and chicken parmi also earn praise, though the chips can be hit-or-miss depending on the day .

⸻

🎶 Atmosphere & Vibe

This place brims with history—it’s claimed as Sydney’s oldest pub (founded in 1828)—and it feels like it. Nestled in The Rocks, it keeps the charm alive with warm, friendly service and a timeless vibe . • Outdoor seating is a highlight—perfect for people-watching and soaking up the buzz of the city . • Live music rolls through Wednesday to Sunday, spinning tunes from ’60s classics onward and drawing a happy, upbeat crowd . • Visitors from solo travelers to families say staff make them feel right at home—nothing stuffy about this joint .

⸻

💰 Value & Service

Priced reasonably for downtown Sydney (AU $10–33 range), the service is consistently praised as efficient and courteous, even when it’s packed . Outdoor ordering via QR code seems seamless, and bar service is quick and friendly .

⸻

👍 Overall Impression • Beer lovers will be right at home with the diverse selection. • Foodies should come for the fish and chips, stay for the steak, chicken parmi, and garlic bread fan-favourites . • Atmosphere seekers will enjoy the living history, outdoor vibe, and live...

This is an update from an initial review.

We have been back numerous times in the last year and each time we've had the best time. The menu lives up to the reputation of very good pub food.

The restaurant staff upstairs are exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and super efficient.

Four of us were celebrating Mother's Day. As we were about to leave we were gifted with a delightful Mothers Day present. We were absolutely touched by this beautiful thoughtful gesture. Thank you so much Fortunes of War. X 14/5/23

Booked four people lunch Sunday. Loved the old heritage quaintness of the hotel. We dined in the bistro upstairs, light bright and airy, and not too crowded although fully booked.

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Efficient, attentive and friendly.

The guys ordered the beef stew with fresh chunky bread for dipping. They loved the flavours , no complaints there but felt the gravy juices perhaps could have been a tad thicker. The chips were great too. Two of us ordered the goats cheese pumpkin salad with the chicken and rocket. . Lots and lots of rocket. Perhaps the goats cheese and pumpkin could have been a bit more generous. No complaints with the taste, it was everything and more. I’d order the dish again.

We had a fabulous afternoon and price wise was very fair. We’ll definitely be back with friends. The charm of this hotel is quite exceptional.

I’ve only given 4.5 stars only because as said above a little additional here and there would have gone a long way to full stars.

We had a lovely...
