//**Onam Feast Review 15th September 2024

We had the pleasure of enjoying the Onam feast at Saravanaa Bhavan in Parramatta, and it was truly delightful! The feast incorporated all the traditional Kerala delicacies, each dish packed with authentic flavors and beautifully prepared. The variety and taste were outstanding, making it a perfect celebration of Onam. Highly recommend for anyone craving a true Kerala feast!

It was a Tapestry of Tastes:

"The dishes weave together a tapestry of tastes, each element contributing to the overall culinary experience. It's like savoring a work of art."

What truly sets Saravana Bhavan Parramatta apart is not just the delectable food but also the impeccable service. The staff's attentiveness, courtesy, and efficiency contributed to making the entire dining experience memorable.

[Not sponsored by HSB] Btw they have a RESTROOM, but it is a bit far from the hand wash, beyond the kitchen. You can catch a glimpse of their kitchen though. PARKING is available on the street and plenty of secured parking nearby at fixed prices starting at $12. Parking on the street is free on public holidays.

This review is for people who would like to explore Tamil cuisine. I can relate to the feeling where you want to try a new cuisine but don't want to end up at a restaurant where the food isn't authentic plus you regret paying so much for a food you didn't like.

HSB is a very popular vegetarian restaurant in south india esp Tamilnadu. So it's a no-brainer to visit this place when you are craving for idly, dosa, vada, pongal, sambar, chutney, filter coffee, etc.

We went in here for the first time. Were looking forward to having the breakfast buffet but unfortunately it isn't available during public holidays and weekdays. What a bummer!

As we arrived we were given a table. Scanned the QR code to access the menu app and placed orders from it. You can place orders for multiple items and pay altogether at the counter near the exit. Add items and click on your table number on the left to confirm the order.

We ordered :

Channa (chola) batura - 5/5 Taste and quantity was spot on 👌

Parotta and gravy with white chutney - 4/5 Taste and quantity was good. Parotta felt a little thick and heavy.

Paper roast - 4/5 Dosa was good size. But the chutneys were less in quantity. Little more of the white chutney and sambar would be nice.

Watermelon juice - 5/5 My kid loved it!

Filter coffee - 4/5 I wanted more sugar. Had mentioned it while ordering but they didn't bring.

Masala Tea - 4/5 It was for wifey. She felt the proportion of milk was more.

STAFFS : Are courteous!

We will visit this...

My experience with Saravanaa Bhavan in Paramatta has been a disaster the last two times I visited. Earlier, though its over priced for the quantity they offer, I didn't experience any issues on the food or service front. However, my visit yesterday was extremely disappointing on several front.

To start with, 1 set of medhu vadas, 2 filter coffees, 1 masala soda and 1 samosa chana chaat costed me a whopping 45 aud which is expensive for a set of brunch like dishes and not main course meals. But I understand, pricing is subjective of many factors and I have been considerately visiting the restaurant time and again due to my positive experiences.

However, last two visits with the latest one yesterday (22/03) has absolutely terrified me. The audacity to have a set of AUD 5 Indian specialty coffees served in normal room temperature to native Indian customers!! It wasn't even warm, straight out room temperature which my mom and me felt abusive having to drink after paying nothing short of the market price.

Samosa chana chaat was average and unpresentable, but the dosas and idlis along with the chutneys and sambar which I usually order are super authentic in taste and those are a must try here.

Service has been basic across all my visits and hygiene is questionable especially in the handwash area where I came across 3 cockroaches running around.

Team, please be considerate of customers coming to dine at the restaurant. For the prices charged per items, I believe it is fair of me to expect at least good food, let alone the service.

I'm tad too devastated to give myself a second chance to visit anytime soon, may be in the distant future sometime with an expectance of better food...

I visited ( 23/08/25 ) for lunch with my family and friends, and unfortunately the service was very disappointing. We ordered a few dishes along with pineapple juice. When the juice arrived, the colour looked strange, so I tasted it. It was completely watery and lacked any sweetness. When I tried to politely share this concern with the staff, the service girl immediately cut me off and insisted that they always use fresh fruits and never add water, without even listening to what I was saying. Her response was very rude, and instead of addressing the issue, she dismissed my feedback. I simply told her to take it back and assured her that I would pay in full, but my main concern was the attitude. On top of this, we requested extra curry for porota from another staff member, who said she would bring it. We waited almost 30 minutes, but it never came. Later, when coffee was finally served (also delayed), I asked her again about the curry. She just said, “Sorry, I forgot, I’ll get it now.” By then, we had already finished eating, so we told her not to bother. As a regular customer of the Saravana Bhavan chain, I feel that both the food quality and customer service have gone down compared to before. My friends, who also visit frequently, share the same opinion. We even spoke to the manager, who admitted that many staff are new and require proper training. However, the staff member in question has been there for over a year, so this is not just a “new staff” issue. Overall, I feel the restaurant must seriously improve not only its service standards but also the consistency of food quality and timely service to maintain the reputation Saravanaa Bhavan once had.

Update 08/06/2021: Ordered Gobi chilli, Mushroom pepper fry, Mini ghee idli sambar, North Indian thali and South Indian thali. Gobi chilli and Mushroom pepper fry were good. Mushrooms were not too soft and was crunchy. Gobi chilli had no chillies, but tasted good. Mini ghee idli sambar was good, as usual. North Indian thali had roti, dal makhni, mix veg curry, Paneer mutter, jeera rice, raitha, papad and gulaab jamoon and tasted above average. South Indian thali had 3 puri, channa, sambar, rice, rasam, sweet, kulambu, raitha, dal, veg curry, papad and yogurt. This time, the food tasted average. Maybe because I ordered thali for dinner? I don't know. There were only 3 waiters to service the whole restaurant and hence, the service was slow. Update 20/07/2020: visited again for the special meals. My daughter loves mini idlis here! 12/11/2019: Definitely recommend Saravana special meal! All the dishes were good, specially, the special kuzhambu and rasam. The managers too, were very friendly and pleasant. Last time, I had ordered Mysore masala dosa, Ghee idli sambar, Milagai podi idli and Chilli bajji. While everything was good, chilli bajji was terrible (too oily, cold and too much batter). Overall, a good place for its typical South Indian vegetarian food!
