I never stay at a Holiday Inn or hotel I could find in the US when I travel. This hotel looked interesting on Orbitz.
I think it was originally a boarding house because of the design and the fact that the restaurant and bar were added in later.
The hallway lights are motion activated. When the elevator door first opens, it's very The Shining. Each floor has a very unique level of "someone is going to cut my face off and wear it" decor. And not in the cool way like John Travolta and Nicholas Cage before he got the Danny Devito in Batman Returns haircut. There are a lot of animal bones and old armoires with doors that don't quite shut.
As far as converting an alleged boarding house to a hotel, they didn't quite get it to 100%. There is no fridge. I can live with that because I have a window ledge and it's February. The one staple they forgot was a coffee machine. I can live without it because I just wait until I'm at the cafe. Most people would want one though.
My experience was quite different at this hotel though. I'm weird, so I always leave the do not disturb sign up for my entire stay. According to Netflix's writers of Dirk Gently, having the sign up for 24 hours is weird. This hotel doesn't have a sign to hang on the door. I asked the concierge for one, but they don't have it. As a result, I asked him to not give me any house keeping for my entire stay. He wrote it down, but I was less than confident.
I spent the next day taking a train to Italy to sightsee and came back by 4:00pm. When I arrived at the door to my room, it wasn't closed all the way. I was able to push the door open without my key and I saw that my room had been refreshed by the housekeeper.
Even though nothing was missing, I was very upset by this. I couldn't find the concierge, but the man at the bar offered to help me. He ended up speaking to the owner and making sure it would not happen again.
Apparently, craft breweries here also drop off beer samples to bars. So, a bottle of beer was gifted to me to make up for the room. Pretty cool.
The next day, one of the staff members stopped me to ask why I didn't want housekeeping. None of your business, right? I told her I just don't make a mess.
Overall, The hotel is located in a good spot to walk everywhere. They have a restaurant and bar if you don't want to go too far. It's up to you if you want to stay here. I have no...
Read moreWe stayed for two nights at Weisses Rössl. The hotel is well located in the old city and has a beautiful roof terrace for breakfast and dinner if you choose. The breakfast included a nice buffet plus the ability to order hot items (eggs, pancakes, etc). The staff was very friendly. While the stay was nice, we had a few issues / watch outs for future guests:
Would still recommend staying but don’t splurge for the suite… you’re better off with a room that you can actually get to easily.
Note parking is for a fee at a nearby garage. There is no option to drive up to the hotel with luggage so you need to bring it all...
Read moreThis is a very nice hotel. Staff was helpful and polite. Breakfast was great and included eggs to order and various coffee choices. Location is great for walking around the old town. Depending on crowds, taxis and/or Uber may not be able to pull up to hotel. However, it's only a two minute walk from where the pedestrian area ends. We were always able to be dropped off and picked up at the hotel's front door. Restaurant was excellent, but crowded. Rooms were pleasant. The bathroom is odd. There is a toilet in a small black painted room, but the sink and shower are basically in the bedroom area. Shower is private while in it, but no private dressing area. Can't wash hands in middle of night without having to turn a light on in the bedroom. Also, the way the sink area is positioned, it's the first spot you see walking in the room. Not very nice seeing toothbrushes etc... when walking in. There is an elevator, but if you take the spiral stairs, be careful as they seem a little perilous. Overall it's a nice, reasonably priced hotel in a...
