This place is a must-see when visiting Salzburg.
Built into a century-old building in the historical downtown of Salzburg, the Fideler Affe (loosly translated as Jolly Monkey) surprises with is stone pillars, arches, and classic restaurant look, giving you the feeling of being set back in time. Despite the classy environment, the service and cuisine is par excellence and is nothing short of a 1 Michelin Star restaurant. What seperates the Jolly Monkey from its competitors is for one the impeccable service, followed right by its culinary delights. The service staff is fluent in all possible languages and is happy to explain you daily specials and what kind of dishes you must try when in Austria. What set them apart for me though, was the beer quality. The Trumer Pils, a not well known but internationally acclaimed boutique beer brewery, is being drafted according to original pils standards without utilizing instant coolers. This means that you have to wait approx. 5 minutes for your beer as the foam needs time to settle, but rest assured that the wait is worth the while, as you will be surprised with a genuine Trumer Pils including foam crown and excellent taste.
Overall it is great value for money and I never had a disappointing time in there. Be warned, the restaurant is well visited and you might be asked to share a table (which funny enough is common in Austria), but given the open and outgoing nature of the Austrians, I met many interesting people there and had a great evening everytime. If you are not up to this social challenge, make sure you reserve in advance as the restaurant is open for...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I arrived in Salzburg on Friday afternoon and called to book a table here but were told they don’t take reservations and we should try to come early or late to get a table. We arrived at 7:45, which admittedly was a busy time, to see tables with ‘Reserved’ signs on them. We were greeted by one of the staff (Michael if the owner is reading this) and told they do take reservations and we ‘weren’t told that on the phone’ and that we ‘must have misunderstood’ as they do, indeed take reservations, they were just too busy for us. We were told we would have to wait, a long while, for a table and that this was ‘prime time’ so we 'should have expected it’. All in a tone that suggested we were children and had been quite naughty. I haven’t been treated so rudely by the staff of a restaurant in years and we just came from Paris, so that’s saying something. Suffice to say we don’t have any idea if the food is good, just that Michael was inordinately rude and we won’t ever...
Read moreHumm... I came here because the review was good on Google Maps. It's my first time coming to this city. The food was good. But the service was tearable. Male staff was good but the female staff let's say that it's one of the worst service that I ever had in my life and I pretty much travel all over the world. I felt the bad service was directed towards Asians. I was reading online in Austria people tip about 5-10% but in some Asian countries there is no tip. But people have to realize that some Asian are from US like me. Actually the survice was so bad that this is the first restaurant that I never tipped for a country that accepts tips in my life. Also I never got the roller dessert menu as I realize in the other reviews. I did see other customer receiving it. If you are Asian best to stay away from...
