We visited on 13 August 2024 at approximately 11:15am.
We ordered the Raisin bread which was absolutely wonderful - warm, fluffy and fresh out of the oven, it was tasty and delicious. We even had the privilege of meeting the owner, Mr Franz Grabmer who happened to be tending the counter during our visit. He was very friendly and polite.
Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the baker - a man who looked in his late 40s, wearing a white shirt and black shorts cutting and preparing the dough who RUINED our experience here today.
Due to space constraints, the entrance to the counter can get congested rather easily. I was 2nd in line, discussing with my wife what to get, next thing I know I feel something push against my arm. I turn around and the Baker is holding an entire tray of raw dough and forcing his way through. And I mean literally using the tray to BULLDOZE us out of the way, I backed up into my wife and an elderly couple behind that almost fell and we were also quite taken aback by his actions. His face remains indifferent as if we trash on the streets and the most appalling part is that he could not even be bothered to say “excuse me”.
Still in a state of shock, we just went back to our place in the queue. Less than 10 seconds later, I hear my wife let out a squeak and I feel a SHOVE (not a push) from behind. The baker comes back again and shoves both of us out of the way, all the while not even opening his mouth to say anything or look at us, he goes back to his station and continues cutting dough. Mr Grabmer is pre-occupied with a customer and doesn’t seem to notice.
To say I am appalled is an understatement, we are certainly not expecting any red carpet treatment but whatever we experienced is most certainly unacceptable. Shame on him for such behaviour, what was initially a wonderful food find was entirely ruined because of this experience.
IN SUMMARY Food is great (their raisin bread is to die for), Mr Grabmer is super friendly but watch out for the EXTREMELY RUDE AND GROUCHY baker who will push and shove you if you ever get in his way. Not sure if it’s because we are tourists or someone woke up on the wrong...
Read moreThis is a very unique bakery in Salzburg as it is located within St. Peter's monastery. It is also the oldest bakery in Salzburg as it dates back to year 1160. Within the monastery, it is located in a building basement next to a water mill, which is used for power.
There is a limited menu of items that the bakery produces. They make a few different types of bread rolls, which are laid out on trays. Bread prices are reasonable, though you will pay a bit more than what you would pay at a grocery. If you come here, make sure to bring a paper or storage bag. I bought a couple of rolls, but was not given anything to carry them. As a result, I placed them inside a napkin and put it in the pocket of my jacket...
Read moreI smell bread immediately when I entered courtyard!!!! They are making many different types black and milk, but for individual purchases I was told only sourdough, rye, and brioche on the board are available. The price is good. They are warm!! I’m glad I added brioche last second. The bun is soft and bouncy. Subtly sweet and very milky. Rye mini “Vintschgerl Roggenbrötchen mit Gewürzen” is dense but moist and spiced with fennel. I would have tried sourdough but it’s quite big. (These rustic rolls are not aiming for the trendy airiness be aware.)
Locals cycle here for a quick Brot recharge too XD another inhale before leaving...
