I am not want to leave negative reviews to businesses, but we walked out of this pastry shop with a sour taste due to the negative attitude of one server. We are foreign visitors and sat down for a coffee-and-pastry experience in Vienna. I asked a question concerning two different types of coffee. We were trying to decide whether to have a Viennese-style coffee or a pot of coffee for two people. The waitress verbally assaulted us for asking what was Viennese-style coffee. She insisted that it was nothing but coffee and milk just like the pot of coffee order. She may have been having a bad day, but she took it out on us. I tried to speak a few words in German asking what was the difference between the two. She returned after a while with a smile and a better attitude to fix the damage she had done. I regret she even got a tip because I wasn’t going to leave one. There was no reason to speak to anyone the way she did. If she didn’t understand my question in English, she could’ve gotten someone who could. The coffee was great but the Sacher torte was dry. A negative interaction that lasts 30 seconds to one minute in somebody’s day can sour the whole experience. A little patience, especially in the hospitality business, goes a long way.

The Café L. Heiner, or the K.u.K. Hofzuckerbäcker Café-Konditorei L. Heiner, is a lovely coffee shop in the center of Vienna's main street promenade, the Kärtnerstraße. This café place features many elements from the old days, such as ornaments and a lot of traditional decoration. We had a delicious goulash soup with a Viennese Kaisersemmel, the famous emperor's roll, together with a hot lemonade, as well as a Kleiner Brauner, a small traditional Viennese coffee with a tad of milk and a Nussbeugerl, a croissant-style pastry filled with nuts. Yummy, yummy, yummy for all who are into this. The ambience of this place is elegant and traditional with reference to the imperial times of the K.u.K. Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. The staff is very friendly and the prices are quite reasonable given the location in the promenade in old town Vienna close to the famous Saint Stephen's Cathedral and the fancy interior. And be sure you have a seat upstairs, as here the real coffee shop experience of this place unfolds. From Vienna with Love, Dr. Dr. Immanuel Fruhmann

Heiner has stunning cakes and other sweets, and even invented a few classics, like the Kardinalschnitte! It doesn’t get any better than this in Vienna, though you want to check out other top institutions too—equally delicious, but with a quite different selection of delicacies. This is the place where Sachertorte is actually enjoyable… moist, with fruity jam and tasty ganache. Sacher’s own torte is still a step up though (If you get a fresh slice!), the kind you’ll want another piece of. The wonderful atmosphere at Heiner is real old school post-war Vienna. The focus here is on cakes and nothing else. The outdated atmosphere is delightful if a tad shabby in the room upstairs at the Kärntnerstrasse branch. Service is also typical for Vienna—and by that I mean you’d better not have high expectations.

Never again, nunca mas, mai più, ni cagda, plus jamais. In my personal experience I will not come back. First of all I didn't feel myself welcomed and didn't notice any kindness which should be the main for any waiter personnel who didn't speak english but instead insisted with her native language, secondly it was written to wait to be seated but nobody came to welcome us even after they saw us. So I decided to take a seat by myself and even to grab a menu by myself, and after time I was waiting without anyone who came at my table to pick up the order, I decided to ask the waitress for order sth but she replied nervously and roughly, she even made the verse of my "sorry" then she went on. After more than ten minutes I was able to order. The dessert wasn't bad but neither tasty, the hot chocolate was just like any other "ciobar" from discount. The price was quite high but like others cafés. I could understand the reaction if it had been 5 p.m. in the afternoon but it happened at half past nine in the morning. It's unbelievable this behaviour with customers and only with foreign ones who don't speak austrian. The hospitality is not typical of this café and their personnel are rude and impolite....

I was there for the first and definitely last time. I am not from Austria and I don’t speak German but when I nicely asked the waitress if she is speaking english she immediately started to be rude. Her face started to be very judgemental. When I get my piece of cake and sit there for a while the woman was walking to other tables and never went to me to ask if everything is fine like to others. To get a receipt I needed to ask her by myself and the woman went to me very “angry”. I thought that maybe it is the bad day for her, everyone has days like this ;) but for local people she was really nice. And about the cake, I ate cheesecake and it was the worst that I’ve have ever eaten. It was soooo dry. At the and of cake the part which should be soft and tasty was like a crunchy stone. If I can give some advice, please give Your customers fresh cakes for the price like this… The cheapest cakes that I’m buying in supermarket are 100% better… I will understand it if it will be end of the day but I was there in the middle of the day before dinner! When I’m making cakes at home, them are so dry after a week. I’m sorry but highly NOT recommend...
