Tourists, stay away! My husband and I visited this cafe today and I have to say this was the WORST customer service I have ever witnessed. As others have said, there seems to be a dislike for anyone who isn't a local, in particular from a tall, elderly waiter.
We came in and were looking forward to trying some cake and the coffee (Einspänner) but it was a complete DISASTER. After taking our order (which he didn't seem pleased to do...), he brought over speciality coffee that had a glass of liqueur on the side and was a completely different name to the coffee ordered (there really was no confusion; not only did we say the name but also pointed to the item on the menu to ensure there was no confusion). When we kindly called on him and said this wasn't what we ordered, he didn't give eye contact and simply wafted at us telling us we ordered it and walked straight away without another word. That was the first sign of trouble.
He then brought over our two pieces of cake and one of the cakes was incorrect too. When my husband tried to tell him he didn't order a Sachetorte, the waiter tried to waft this away too by saying "we don't have the house cake with warm sauce" but proceeded to take the Sachetorte plate away so we were very bemused. Only 4-5 minutes later, he came back with what we'd originally ordered (so, clearly, he knew we were right but no apology). When he came back with this, we tried to tell him again we didn't order this coffee but he ran off (we even said we don't drink alcohol and that we ordered two Einspänner). Finally, I had to call over a slightly nicer gentleman (the manager) to tell him of the error. He didn't apologise either, but I overheard the two of them converse in German right behind us - whereby the elderly waiter tried to say there must have been some translation issues - and proceeded to take away the coffees. As you can imagine, no sense of remorse or apology in sight from him nor his manager made it all the more worse.
To top it all off, our coffees finally arrived (after we finished the cakes) and they were cappuccinos (the waiter even called them as such). You really couldn't make it up and we thought it was an episode of Fawlty Towers. We decided not to bother trying anymore and just drank those drinks but we were appalled by this behaviour. This elderly waiter should put a sign on the door telling tourists to go away if he is really that uncomfortable in our presence.
To finish off, there were a group of locals (our age) sat next to us. The experience seemed to differ greatly from ours - with the same waiter - further reinforcing our being uncomfortable that we were received a much nastier welcome by the staff. When we asked for the bill, he again didn't make eye contact or stopped by us, simply walking off again saying "yes, yes, yes". 5 minutes go by and the group next to us then asked for their bill which was swiftly brought over to them and the elderly waiter conversed with them quite amiably. As he was walking away from their table, he said very grimly without stopping again, "cash or card". He brought over the bill and then snatched the card from my husband's hand. This isn't a case of having no patience (as we clearly had a lot of patience being served by this man). This was just understanding when someone is set against certain clientele. Busy or not, customer service can't drop this low. Safe to say, we didn't leave a tip.
I always get suspicious reading negative reviews as I wonder if the customer stepped out of line somehow but the nature of all the 1-2 star reviews are the same so I implore any tourists to think twice and only go in here if you are desperate. The experience will leave a really sour taste. Cafe Central and Sluka were both much friendlier...
Read moreAt this point I think it's better if you guys put a board outside that "Asian and people of color are not welcome to your cafe". I visited this cafe with of hope of having a good experience but instead it was the worst experience I have ever had in my life so far. I visited this place with a friend and since there were no available seats available we decide to wait and right before us were 3 white people waiting as well. The waiter approached them very politely as expected and offered them a table with no questions asked even though they had no prior reservations. When it was my turn to talk the waiter approached to me very rudely asking me if I have any reservations if not then it's not possible to dine here. He assured that I will have to wait atleast an hour to get a table there and I even politely agreed to wait as most of the places had long queue outside and it was pointless for me to go elsewhere. I think the guy didn't expect that I would agree to wait, so he reaffirmed that it could take 1 or even 2 hours with a smirk on his face and at this point I was sure that he didn't want us there. We told him that we will wait no matter what and he just arrogantly walked away. Just after 20 seconds of this incident happening, another waiter who saw us waiting attended us and offered us a table and to our surprise there were atleast 2 other tables that were free the who time we were there. After going through your past reviews I was shocked to see that this was not the first incident, apparently you have many similar reviews even dates years ago. So it's very clear that there is a very serious racial discrimination happening here and nothing has been done to rectify this. Quality of food doesn't matter if you don't know how to provide good service to your customers. I highly recommend not to visit this place unless you are white or yo just want to...
Read moreI had been eagerly anticipating a delightful hot chocolate experience at the oldest café in Vienna. Upon arrival, we patiently waited to be seated, considering the café was bustling with customers, which was understandable. After being seated, however, we had to wait an additional 20 minutes before a member of the staff came to take our order. Given the busy atmosphere, we acknowledged the delay.
While most tables were adorned with tablecloths, the waiter took one to place on the table next to mine but neglected to do the same for mine. Although it didn't particularly bother me, there seemed to be a lack of consistency in their service.
Finally, our order was taken, but from that point onward, our experience turned into a complete disaster. We waited a staggering 40 minutes before the waiter brought us our cake, and an additional 10 minutes before the hot chocolate arrived. Now, I appreciate a nice, thick hot chocolate with a dollop of fresh cream on top, but what I received was a lukewarm chocolate with melted cream. It appeared as though the chocolate had been left sitting on the bar counter for quite some time, diminishing its quality.
To add to the frustration, getting the attention of our waiter to request the bill proved to be an arduous task, as we had to endure an extended period of waiting. This entire experience truly dampened my enjoyment and left me feeling disappointed.
It is disheartening to say that my overall experience at this café was far from pleasant. The delays, inconsistent service, and subpar quality of the hot chocolate left a lasting negative impression. For a place boasting such historical significance, I had hoped for a more memorable and...
