Wondered into this place randomly and was surprised to see Kaffee Alt Wien has appeared on several foodie blogs and recommended lists. We came here for lunch as we were starving from the skipped breakfast. We were welcomed by a very hardworking and diligent waiter. We saw him being the only one manning the entire floor in the restaurant and there was about 10 tables in the smoking and non-smoking section. He didn't have a moment to share but keep working at it and provided us with attentive service. The setting of the venue is an very old fashioned Viennese style and covered in retro posters. If you decide to go to the toilet, you will be pleasantly surprised that the ambience from there is heavily contrast to the dining area. We ordered the heartening goulash with bread rolls and the homemade sausage along with a green salad to sample first followed by the Viennese apple strudel with vanilla sauce. Unfortunately, for me, the food didn't do it for me except the strudel. The beef in the goulash was dry which was disappointing because I really enjoyed the sauce. The homemade sausage tasted like it has sat there for awhile as the skin was very chewy dry. The only winning dish was a nice hearty portion which gave it a sweet ending given the previous dish was not to pleasing. In all, I would recommend you to come in to try their coffee (it came with a glass of water without me asking to wash off my pallete - love the small details like this) which I enjoyed every much and get a slice of their authentic strudel.

Kaffee Alt Wien is a hidden gem in the heart of Vienna, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and exceptional cuisine. Established in 1922 and managed by the legendary Hawelka family for a time, this café has long been a beloved institution. The atmosphere here is enchanting, with dim lighting and walls adorned with posters, blurring the lines between a traditional Viennese café, a pub, and a restaurant. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, inviting you to relax and savor the moment. The café's commitment to organic and regional ingredients is truly impressive. Their menu reflects a deep respect for quality and tradition, featuring dishes made from locally sourced, organic meats. The Alt Wien Schnitzel, made from organic Wald-ROC pork, is a standout, as is their rich and flavourful organic beef goulash. Each dish is a testament to their philosophy: organic isn't just a trend here. It's a deeply ingrained practice. In 2020, the addition of the Blue Salon further elevated the café's cultural offerings, providing a perfect venue for events like press conferences, celebrations, and art exhibitions. Kaffee Alt Wien has always prioritised art and culture, and this new space continues that tradition beautifully. Whether you’re here for the food, the history, or the ambiance, Kaffee Alt Wien offers an experience that is both authentic and unforgettable. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore the true taste of Vienna. Vielen Dank KaW

I googled this place as I had limited time in Vienna and I wanted to eat strudel before I left. It was rated as one o the best in town and it did not disappoint! I was greeted on entry and invited to choose my seat. They asked if I smoke and after I said no they directed me to the back of the cafe where an automatic sliding glass door separates the smoking/non smoking rooms. I declined as I preferred to stay toward the front of the cafe so I could admire all the old gig posters and people watch as I was alone. The service was very fast, though I only ordered a large beer and strudel with whipped cream. The food and beer were so good I actually asked for the same again as soon as I finished. Again service was very fast and the staff were friendly and enjoyed a joke. The place was only a quarter full at 1pm when I went so availability for walk in seats was great.

Mockery and physical confrontation with staff , great food but Never Going back

Visited this restaurant after reading great reviews. The food here was great, but the service was a nightmare. Our order was messed up, and when we asked if our ordered Schnitzel was coming, the staff replied by saying we hadn’t ordered that, which is strange considering when he took our order he repeated the order back to us and we confirmed.

After that we received a bad attitude and no communication that the order had now been put through to the kitchen. We continued to wait for the food. When we went to pay for the bill, our original server looked confused and asked another staff member to help us, which made us wait longer. During settling the bill and as routine he asked us if we wanted to tip with our meal, I stated absolutely not, the service was subpar and explained the reasons. This staff member then began to blame us which was unprofessional, we paid and went to leave the restaurant with this staff following behind mocking what I had said, I was shocked with this behaviour, really… a staff member mocking in a silly voice the customer, talking back to customers and giving a bad attitude. A simple apology or acknowledgment, and please don’t expect a tip for that service. Following on he came up behind me as I turned around and put the menu on the table, and acted aggressively, in my personal space. I took a photo of him, which led to him grabbing my arm and twisting it, and two other staff members had to intervene. Luckily for this as I was able to leave the restaurant peacefully because of this. Absolutely shocking and awful service, won’t be back and this ruined our experience. Can’t believe this restaurant would employ someone like that, it’s not hard to ask respectfully why we wouldn’t tip and apologise on behalf of his colleghe, but to mock and physically confront a customer is unprofessional. Definitely...

LILY IS RACIST. I haven’t experienced racism in years. I was definitely reminded of that here. I’m sitting in the middle of the dining hall, there are three tables to my left and three tables to my right and 2 tables behind me. The female waitress (Lily) gracefully served the surrounding tables. 45min after being seated, I caught her glimpse and she just said, just to wait from the front of the bar. I tried to get her attention again 15min later but she just ignored me. The table next to me saw that I was not receiving service and had to tell another waiter to please serve me because no one else is. He tried to help and we ordered our food and drinks. Within minutes, we got our drinks and soup. Then, she came up to check on the table next to me..and they said something to her. She then turned to me and stated that we were ok. Skipped me, went to the other table beside me and asked them for their order. Both tables beside me have ordered, ate, paid and I was still waiting on my food. Different people at this point were seated at the table beside me and she was there within 6min. Of course she ignored me. Nearly 2 hours of seating without food, she came out and asked if we ordered frankfurters and schnitzel. I said we didn’t order the Frankfurter. She then took the whole thing away before I could even tell her that I ordered the schnitzel and potatoe salad. 2hours in, I saw the guy that took our order and he apologized and gave us the sausage goulash. My schnitzel and potato salad never came. I got her name from the guy...

Kaffee Alt Wien is a charming, old-world brunch spot that transports you to a different era. Nestled in the heart of Vienna, the café boasts a warm and cozy atmosphere, perfect for unwinding or enjoying a quiet meal. The décor is classic and slightly rustic, with vintage wooden furniture and dim lighting that add to the nostalgic feel.

The brunch menu offers a simple but satisfying selection of traditional Austrian fare. The scrambled eggs, paired with fresh bread and butter, are a must-try. Their selection of meats and cheeses is of high quality, and they also serve hearty soups for a more substantial meal. While the food is straightforward, the flavors are authentic and comforting.

What sets Kaffee Alt Wien apart is the relaxed vibe and friendly service. It’s the kind of place where locals come to linger over coffee, and tourists can find a cozy corner to take a break from exploring the city. The coffee is rich and well-brewed, making it a perfect spot for coffee lovers.

The schnitzel chicken at Kaffee Alt Wien is a delightful dish, perfectly embodying the café's traditional, no-nonsense approach to comfort food. The schnitzel is crispy on the outside, yet tender and juicy inside, with a golden-brown breading that’s light and flavorful. It’s served with a side of fresh salad, which adds a refreshing contrast to the hearty main. WhileKaffee Alt Wien the dish is simple, it's executed with care, making it a satisfying option for brunch. Perfect for those craving an authentic taste of Austrian cuisine in a relaxed,...
