I happened to stumble across this restaurant on New Year's Eve, searching for good food. They open until very late, 11pm. The owner was so courteous and inviting. I want a non-pretentious, charming restaurant that serves serious, good food at reasonable prices. This place ticks the box. So I know that it will be one of my frequent visits. The prices are very reasonable for a restaurant in district 1. I had, what I believe, a veggie ramen. I'm not a vegetarian, but the best ramen I have had in all my travels was a veggie ramen in Oakland, CA. The ramen I had at this bar was very close to that. To see if your ramen is good, it needs 3 things, good broth, al dente noodles (thick or thin), and "characters" - it's whatever put in after to make everything in harmony. Ramen is surprisingly a "liberal" dish; in the sense that you can make a lot of add-ons and it still stays "ramen". It's very unlike Pho. My ramen dish had minimal surprising twists, which made it very pleasant. The kimchi itself had a surprise too: the way it tasted reminded me of Vietnamese pickle (so I think it was fermented with a bit of vinegar and white bulks of spring onions?). The food is what I would call, "proper Asian fusion", not the nauseating, "what's that" kind of Asian fusion you see in many "modern" restaurants. You could see elements of Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese sprinkle here and there....

Mr.DU, Du hast...

For the past three years, I've been eating ramen almost every Saturday, so I know what good ramen tastes like. When I saw a new spot in the city with a 4.8 rating, I thought it must be exceptional. However, I found the ramen and side dishes to be pretty average.

First, the tori karaage came with small chicken pieces, which reduced the overall satisfaction. The mayo served with it and the crispiness were okay, but nothing special. The cucumber salad was too watery, almost turning into a soup as you ate it. The taste was good, but I would have preferred less vinegar.

Now, the ramen. The broth was fine, but the pork meat had little crispness and was chewy due to the oily parts. Ideally, the pork should be crispier and smoother. The mushrooms were an ungenerous portion of only two slices, as you can see in the photo. The soup itself was not hot enough. The noodles were definitely not handmade, and you can find similar quality in any Asian shop around here.

I stumbled upon this local gem while doomscrolling through Google Maps, and it was definitely worth it! Let's start with the interior. While nothing particularly stands out (aside from Japanese-style art), it's very neat and welcoming. The service is outstanding, with the waiter being very attentive to our wishes, and his friendliness is key. Now, onto the menu. It's small and precise, so you won't be lost with what to order. We were also provided with a tablet to view pictures of the food, which is a pretty cool solution for a non-chain restaurant. Additionally, we received a free appetizer (kimchi), and our main meal, ramen, didn't take much time to arrive. I've tried many ramen places in Vienna, and this one is truly delicious, especially considering the price. The most expensive dish, the Spicy Beef Ramen, cost only 13.90 EUR, which is below the average price for good ramen in Vienna (15-18 EUR). In summary, this place is a must-try for delicious ramen, accompanied by friendly and welcoming service.

I ate the Spicy Beef Ramen there and it was literally the best Ramen I have ever had. The broth tasted amazing and the spice gave it the little something. Although also my friend who can’t eat spicy said it wasn’t that bad xD… The only thing that was a bit uncomfortable was that our food wasn’t served at the same time. My food surely came around ten minutes before my friend’s. Since I waited for her food to arrive the soup wasn’t hot anymore when I ate, but the amazing taste balanced it out. And i guess it’s a sign for freshly made food, when they serve it when it’s ready…
