In celebration of African Heritage Month, our work decided to buy lunch once a week from a local, black owned business. Mary's was recommended to us, so we ordered from her on Week 2. Oh my word - if you have not eaten here yet, you should. And not just for the food; the moment you walk in the door, you are flooded with the most wonderful smells - I immediately wanted to eat everything. Mary herself greets you from behind the counter- a counter packed with so many delicious options. She had packed everything up for us - 14 lunches, complete with a main, a side, a rice, a drink and a dessert, all for $20! It was such a generous portion, my husband ate the rest for dinner! I ordered curried lamb, jollof rice, fried plantain, pineapple juice and baklava. I also ended up grabbing a bag of peanut brittle because it was sat on the counter and I couldn't help it. A few things about lunch - the lamb was perfect. The curry was bold without being so hot it lost its flavour. The jollof rice was light and delicious. Fried plantain is my favourite food in life and there was so much in there- I ate it all first! Mary's juices are fresh; I think she presses and bottles them herself. It literally just tastes like pureed fruit. But listen - that peanut brittle. I would drive back downtown for that alone. I have a serious sweet tooth and it checked all the boxes. Packed with peanuts, and just melted in your mouth without sticking to your teeth. I also shared a piece of the mango cheesecake with my colleague - it was super light and the mango puree was the perfect tart compliment to the smooth sweet cheesecake. Everyone on my team had nothing but amazing things to say about their lunch. Quantity, quality, service, price, everything. If you haven't eaten here you're...
Read moreWhere do I even start? This is by far the BEST restaurant I have stepped foot in, in a very long time. My boyfriend and I were in Halifax on a getaway trip. We stopped in for dinner around 6:20pm on Saturday night, not knowing that they were actually closed. We walked in and they offered to still serve us. They were extremely friendly and kind. The food though!!! You guys!!! I have no words for how delicious it was. We enjoyed it so much, that we returned in the morning for their breakfast as well haha. Which was also just as delicious. We had the pleasure of chatting with Mary, herself and some other people that worked there. They are the nicest people. It was lovely chatting with them. I can't wait to go back to Halifax just to eat there again.
I'd like to note that the person that commented the 1 star below this review is just a bitter person. When we walked into Mary's the first time, they stated that their dine in was closed to the public due to Covid restrictions. (It's not a very big establishment). So there are no restrooms open to the public in this restaurant until they deem appropriate. So Karen, have a seat. Trying to take down a local establishment for having protocols and rules in place...
Read moreWas in halifax for the weekend from pei. My one plan was to go to Marys african cuisineWe were limited on time so i didnt think id get there. To my surprise after a visit to the maritime Museum i found a little food tent down by the water front with a little stand of marys . I was so excited . The sweetest young lady working there was so friendly. I ordered the ghanaian jollof right away with curry goat and a side of egusi. Also 2 of her samosas. The jollof was flavourful and spicy. The texture was perfect as im picky about my rice . The goat was so tender and just melted in your mouth. Just the right amount of curry and spices she nailed it. The egusi i was skeptical of as i never had it with jollof. It was so good and a perfect combination. It went so well together . I also got 2 samosas and they were so good . Packed full and the patty was light and flaky. Everything was so tasty and fresh. The service was excellent. I was hoping to get to meet Mary herself and say hello. But maybe next time ! This is a for sure stop for me while in halifax. Mary if i may make a suggestion! Palm nut soup and fufu and also some okro strew !!!! I highly recommend this...
