My boyfriend and I went to Obladee last night to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. The server brought us a small sample of sparkling to start and wished us a happy anniversary which was thoughtful. We ordered the gougères and warm baguette with brown butter. I am a cheese lover and my boyfriend is not a picky eater by any means, but we were not able to eat the gougères as the taste was incredibly off-putting. We appreciated that the server kindly took these off our bill and we were left with our baguette and butter. The baguette was very dry and tough to chew as if it had been sitting out all day. It was quite disappointing that we paid a $10 entertainment fee and in the hour and a half we were there, the band played for about 30 minutes. Our experience certainly dampened the mood for our anniversary and we ended up cutting the night short. This was my boyfriend's first visit there upon my suggestion and I was little embarrassed that it did not impress. While Obladee has a beautiful atmosphere and seemingly lots to offer, we were really disappointed by our experience, especially given how...
Read moreI study wine (and pairing wine with food) so I'm always looking for places that will broaden my palate. Hands down I would recommend the 4 course meal with wine pairings, we were just mesmerized by how the food and wine paired beautifully. My fiancé and I shared one order of the 4 course meal and ordered other foods of interest. My favourite was the oysters and its sparkling wine pairing and my fiancé adored the gnocchi paired with a red blend of sangiovese and cab sauv, it was a close second for me with such juicy and flavourful sips. I also really enjoyed the cheese boards (some paired with wine flights). I wish I read the menu properly because I thought it was cheese and charcuterie but it's actually one or the other so I haven't had the chance to try their charcuterie. Because I'm so used to tasting 6+ wines in one sitting, I enjoyed the pairings and flights more because you get small amounts of many wines instead of a big glass of one or two wines. 10/10 would recommend Obladee, it's great for...
Read moreObladee was truly an amazing restaurant experience! The small plates are perfectly executed, with the beef carpaccio and asparagus possibly the best I've ever had. Our server Danielle was very knowledgeable and friendly, and gave great wine recommendations from the well curated wine list. The Lieux Communs Marquette out of Québec was a stand out - fantastic, interesting wine. I also loved my flight of local NS wines.
The atmosphere was charming and well executed, and the music selection is good. The small kitchen that is visible from the dining room gives a sense of connection with the chefs preparing your food and the various sounds and smells that precede the dishes arriving at your table.
I went late on a slow Sunday night with my family and immediately felt welcomed. I'm sad my stay in Halifax won't be longer, so I won't be able to go back and try more wines anytime soon. Next time I'm in Halifax I'll definitely be...
