This post is long but in a nutshell there are much better places to spend this kind of money for the quality of food and service that you will get. Don't fall for the tripadvisor rating as this was an error on our part. I'm from Montreal and have rarely had such an experience in a higher class restaurant such as Chasse et pêche.
Last night, my husband and I wanted to take my parents to a nice restaurant for my mum's birthday. We came from out of town, picked them up and surprised them. Given all of the fabulous reviews we decided to cancel our other reservations at another restaurant and make reservations at Chasse et pêche.
We arrived for our 915 reservations and we were seated promptly. I guess coming from Montreal and having been to many restaurants in the Old port and having many friends in the industry, perhaps I have a bit more expectations of the type of service that you get from your server. Our server had given us the drink menu and when we advised that my parents don't drink alcohol and therefore we won't be drinking either, he took the menu and grabbed the wine glasses with a certain annoyance. After this, it set the tone for the type of service we received.
We were waiting for my husband to arrive from trying to find parking, and after 15min of not having a menu, we had to request menus. The server just seemed like we were such an inconvenience to him. He came to pour us water and reached over the table to try to aim into my mum's glass rather than go around the table. There was just this lack of caring that was overtly obvious. I told him that it was mums birthday and not once did he even acknowledge it, neither verbally or with his service.
I will give it to him that he was knowledgeable about the menu and went through it with us. He mentioned that the Chasse et peche meal would be kobe beef and half a lobster meat taken out. This meal would be 62$. I opted for that as I thought it would be sufficient and filling. My parents got fish and they were told it was a king fish salmon with salad. My husband got duck.
We were asked if we wanted entrées, and got the same look of annoyance when we declined. We got our plates and it was the smallest plates I'd ever seen for main dishes.
The salmon with salad and potatoes was a small piece of pan fried salmon which tasted of oil with 3 or 4 pieces of greens and a few mini baby potatoes .
The duck had 4 thin slices of duck with very little gnocchi like pasta. you could count them on the plate.
And the 62$ surf and turf......I saw the plate and it made me angry. I was so disappointed in being misled about the half of a lobster being part of the meal. I have attached pictures for you to see. The taste was nothing spectacular that would make up for such a small portion. The beef was not any different than a regular steak and a very small piece. Not once during our whole meal did our server come to see how the meal was and if everything was to our liking. No pepper was offered. In fact he never spoke to us except to see if want dessert and when we said no, promptly brought the bill.
As we waited for bill to be paid, we could see that the table next to us who were 3 tourists who had ordered 2 bottles of wine were surprised by 3 appetizers that they hadn't ordered from the kitchen and kept saying 'wow that's really nice of them.' Yet we didn't get the same treatment
For close to 300$ bill for 4 meals, horrible service and to made to feel like you are imposing on this 20 some year old waiter, I would highly recommend you go somewhere else, where the food and service will likely be much more memorable. This was quite a...
Read moreWe were blown away by our dinner at Chasse et Peche last night. We’d only been back once since the pandemic but had been going often for about a decade after it opened in 2007. It became too familiar for us – probably because we would always order more or less the same thing with variations. Their butter-poached lobster dishes remained my reference for how lobster should be cooked, not simply a boiled lobster tossed onto spaghetti as offered by another of our famous eateries. Returning now we were reminded how nice a space it is for an intimate dinner – it does feel a bit like an old club. The wine list is still good, and while we were celebrating with an excellent Knoll gruner there were many decent offerings below $100. The menu is always relatively short but varies all of the time while staying within its style which I think of as high end comfort food, immaculate ingredients prepared with impeccable technique. My wife’s hamachi appetizer included fish any sushi bar would have been proud to serve. The lobster “salad” (mostly lobster) was delicious as was my main course of cod with crispy skin. The fish was cooked perfectly. Deserts were terrific. Our waitress was charming and easily bilingual as we moved back and forth between languages (my wife is French but my accent gives me away). It was a completely satisfying meal that made us wonder why we hadn’t been back in so long. The place has been remarkably consistent since it opened, more so than any other in memory, but it somehow faded into the backround: they weren’t even completely full early last Friday evening. They deserve to get more...
Read moreGreat food and ambience, service was wonderful too! We had the oysters to start, and appetizers of the scallops and piglet risotto. Both appetizers highly recommended! The risotto was nicely al denote, piglet meat was soft, with a nice, melt in your mouth shaved foie gras as a topping to make the dish so decadent! Pork Crackling on top of the dish provided some nice textural balance. Scallops were perfectly done on both sides with the lemon gelee providing a fresh hit to the dish.
Mains were halibut and duck magret. Both cooked and seasoned to perfection. Portions were very good, especially the duck (which was interestingly presented like a flank steak). The citrusy sauce made from gooseberry, chanterelles, and hazelnuts provided good balance and contrast in each bite. Halibut was also very well cooked and flaky with the béarnaise sauce.
Desserts were a nice pleasant surprise with the ‘Rosa’ and ‘Bombe’. The Bombe was rich and decadent with the drops of smoky chocolate drops providing a lovely surprise. The Rosa provided a good counter balance to the richness of the Bombe. The cream cheese dome had a frozen strawberry core, coupled with the sharp rhubarb, sweet fresh strawberries, candied orange peel, and pistachios providing...
