I was blown away and surprised it’s not rated higher! It’s up there with the best restaurants in Toronto (maybe top 30). The food and drinks were incredible - everything I tried was tasty and well balanced. Service was also good (mostly) and the ambiance/decor is great. Be prepared for a tall walk upstairs and a great time!
On the food - hummus and chips was excellent and chips were unique. Note there was a pool of olive oil on top, and I don’t usually like greasy food however this EVOO was super fruity and flavorful so it added a nice touch. Chips were unique, not the classic pita.
Garlic bread lives up to the hype. It’s probably deep fried but soo good… filled with cheese, topped with parm, crunchy and flavorful!
Ricotta gnudi (called dumplings on menu) with vodka sauce was delicate and well balanced. Personally would not choose again though because the ricotta texture was a bit too crumbly for me - but if you like ricotta, you’ll love it! And that is the classic texture of gnudi. Vodka sauce was unblended/chunky which I didn’t expect but it was very tasty.
Both the cocktails and mocktails I tried were excellent.
The mushroom pasta with added truffle was incredible!! Totally classic creamy truffle pasta, and perfectly executed
The banana pie… well it’s huge. Enough for at least 5-6 people, we had a ton left after sharing for two. I would have liked more banana flavor personally… it was mainly meringue and caramel, but I do like both those things so still found it really tasty.
The ambiance is super nice. It’s a vibe with a cool fireplace near the bar too.
Service was good for the most part, but when I went on a weeknight he wasn’t very attentive - I wanted a spoon for the gnudi but he never checked in and I didn’t get to ask for one. We also asked for fresh pepper, he disappeared for a full 10min till food got cold and then brought some pre ground even though we saw a pepper grinder on their counter. But these are minor things, overall service was pleasant and on a Friday night when they were packed, they were much more attentive.
All in all it’s incredible and I can wholeheartedly recommend! It’ll be one of my go-to spots in the area for great food and drinks! And not too pricey… both times my meal was $50 including tax/tip when I would’ve expected...
Read moreRecently opened restaurant at The Well in Downtown Toronto. A very good place in a trendy area that gives you the opportunity to have a casual meal.
An American restaurant that offers snacks, small plates, large plates, pastas and pizzas. Menu here is designed to share plates, giving you the opportunity to try more dishes.
I tried the garlic bread, which actually are mozzarella sticks with a garlic taste. Deep fried, not oily and a good texture when giving it a bite. Good snack to start. Eggplant fries are cooked in a same way, accompanied with a yogurt sauce, very well achieved. However, these were short of salt, to my palate.
Another appetizer I would recommend is the crispy smashed potato. Small potatoes boiled to the right point, served with aioli, which was surprisingly good, and topped with a hinch of salt.
Large plates here are nothing special, however they’re tasty and very well cooked. I ordered the grilled farm chicken, that came with dill gravy a fries and made a good plate. Careful that sizes are big.
Unexpected from this place is how good the make pizzas. Napolitan style pizzas that are definitely recommended to order when coming here. The five cheese was my favorite. Al dente pastas are nicely cooked here as well, generously served and seasoned properly.
Service was very attentive, giving recommendations since the beginning and suggesting plates when requested.
If you fancy a dessert, I’d definitely recommend the Banana Pie.
In summary, this a nice restaurant to enjoy a casual meal and not spending excessive amount of money. For groups of four, Ineould recommend ordering 3 starters (small plates/snacks), and then one large plate, a pizza and a pasta. Everything to share.
Price is very affordable for all the quantity you’ll be served and the quality of food that is tasted here...
Read moreA stunning place with pleasant food and friendly staff with some room for improvement.
Highlights: Stylish space with a great ambiance of a mid century modern / cottage vibe. Friendly and accommodating staff (they had no problem changing our reso from 4 to 5 ppl). Constant plate/utensil refreshments. Banana pie is a must! Buttermilk semifreddo, and mocktail options are stellar. The dough of the pizza was 👌🏼. Prices are not cheap, but reasonable for stylish downtown dining experience.
Could be better: Overall, both service and food need some finessing. The service was friendly, but slow. We were at 2 hr mark and our mains haven’t arrived. We learned that our food was separated to courses, but the term between each course was too long. One of the group had to go home and we got tired from sitting too long and lost appetite to enjoy the later portion of the meal. We wanted to cancel one of our main since we became very full and down by one person, but was not able to as ‘kitchen has already worked on it.’ We wish they had asked us if we want the food to be served as it comes or in course and be advised on the amount of food. One of the guest ordered 8 oz wine and got 5 oz instead; she asked for the correct size and the extra 3 oz didn't follow up. The garlic bread was tasty but there's not much garlic to it, a cheese bread is probably more accurate. I liked the flavour of shrimp and calamari pasta, complex surprising, creamy and decadent... but was overcooked (and so was the truffle pasta). Duck and steak were great but sauces were either too sour or too sweet. Similar with the chicken sausage pizza and octopus salad - I appreciate the approach but the ingredients didn't quite work together. Overall the dishes might need some work in balancing the flavours to take from 'interesting' to...
