Curiosity got the best of me. After watching a few YouTube videos, I discovered an old-school cha chaan teng nestled in the heart of Central. Intrigued, I decided to give it a shot. I ordered the popular hotdog set from the breakfast menu, priced at 42 dollars, which includes a drink. If you opt for double sausage, it’s 46 dollars. So, what’s the verdict? Unfortunately, I found it to be significantly overhyped and underwhelming.
The dough was overly gummy and sticky, which made it less enjoyable. The sausage was disappointingly thin and short; even with a double order, I felt unsatisfied by the end. The sauce, a mix of three parts mayo, one part pickle relish, and half a part mustard, was overly mayo-heavy for my taste.
I think the interior hasn't changed since the 80s or early 90s, giving the dine-in area in the basement a distinctly old-school aesthetic. They only accept cash, which is a bit inconvenient. The staff were efficient but not particularly friendly—typical of the standard in Hong Kong. Overall, I found the hot dog to be overrated and not...

Its location is convenient, but it’s not easy to run into acquaintances in the basement tea restaurant. Of course, their hot dogs are also quite famous. Paired with a cup of hot milk tea, it‘s a winning combination for afternoon tea. Despite the passage of many years, the restaurant has managed to maintain its decor, along with its fragile telephone reception. The only thing that has changed is the price and portion size of the hot dogs.
Nowadays, a hot dog costs over thirty dollars, but the quantity of the sausage has become increasingly less, so little that you have to unwrap the hot dog to find it. This has altered my perception of it. I believe a normal hot dog should visibly have both the head and tail of the sausage. Nonetheless, the quality is still decent. The surface of the hot dog bun is slightly toasted, providing a firm and slightly crispy texture on the outside, while maintaining a soft and tender interior. The soulful essence lies in the salad dressing, which strikes a perfect balance between sweetness and sourness without being greasy. It’s quite appetizing. Some people may consider the hot dog to be sufficient, but I still find the portion size to be too small. It‘s not even enough to satisfy my afternoon...
