Recently, I visited Xia Fei Fei, a Shanghai-style restaurant that’s been getting some attention for its crab roe dishes. The interior is clean and comfortable, with a slightly nostalgic touch. Service was attentive without being overbearing, making for a pleasant dining experience.
Crab Roe Xiao Long Bao The dumpling skin was thin but held its shape well. The broth inside was rich and flavorful, with a noticeable crab aroma. However, it leaned a bit oily, which slightly overshadowed the sweetness of the meat. Still, the juicy burst when you bite into it was satisfying.
Crab Roe Noodles The noodles had a nice chewy texture and were evenly coated with the crab roe sauce. The flavor was bold and savory, perhaps a little on the heavy side, but fans of rich sauces will enjoy it. Portion size was moderate.
Drunken Chicken Served chilled, the chicken was tender and moist. The Shaoxing wine aroma was mild — not too overpowering — giving the dish a refreshing balance. It wasn’t particularly memorable, but it was solid and well-prepared.
Tofu This was a pleasant surprise. The tofu was crispy on the outside and soft inside, with a gentle herbal fragrance from the thyme. Light in flavor, it worked well as a side dish to offset the richness of the crab roe items.
Overall Xia Fei Fei delivers a thoughtful take on classic Shanghai flavors, especially its crab roe dishes, which show good technique. Prices are on the higher side, but reasonable for the quality and setting. A good spot for those looking for refined yet comforting...
