Food looked really good. I will say they did a nice job plating it. But that was the highlight of the experience, unfortunately. The cappuccino my daughter ordered was a watered down iced coffee. The rice and veggies were undercooked and overall the food had little flavor. The Casado con Pollo was average - again it looked better than it tasted and we all commented that we were very hungry at the time to boot. The service was mediocre and the server did his job but not much else. I don’t think he smiled one time. Sometimes a disappointing culinary experience can be offset by a superb personal or environmental experience. This was not the case for no us. The atmosphere is ok but very close to a busy road and noisy at times. The bathrooms were fairly clean. There is a souvenir shop in back but like most shops in the country, it is full of common items that are grossly overpriced. We chose this place because it was highly recommended on a FB site. For 3 dishes and an iced coffee the bill was $40. Of course they add 10% automatically for a tip, which I feel was not warranted. We possibly visited on an off night or time (new cook? Server having a bad day?, etc) as there are plenty of good reviews. However, it did not live up to our expectations and I would not feel comfortable recommending it based on...
Read moreI came here twice because the food and drinks were so good. And I'm going to try to go one more time for breakfast tomorrow morning before my flight. The staff are friendly and speak english well.
The first time, I went for breakfast. I got the gallo pinto and my girlfriend got the breakfast bacon burrito. Both were absolutely delicious. I strongly recommend the tico sauce combined with the rice and beans. I got the soursop fruit juice which was delicious, and she got the monkey business coffee which she loved.
The second time, we wanted breakfast again but came too late in the day, so we had lunch instead. I got the casado with beef (and requested the tico sauce again), and she got the beef chalupa. Once again, both were delicious. The portion sizes are so large considering the relatively affordable cost.
They also have a little shop with souvenirs. The prices and products are comparable to other souvenir shops, but we decided to buy from them to support them because of the great experience we had.
There is also a little ice cream shop to the right of this place. I don't know for sure, but I believe they work together. At the very least, I've seen the ice cream shop staff sitting at the restaurant multiple times. The ice cream shop is...
Read moreSo first off, don't let the looks and the size of this little restaurant fool you. We walked in by mistake confusing it with another restaurant with a similar name. The owner, Roy, convinced us to stay and that he would give us more than what we were looking for. I'm Costa Rican born but haven't been in CR for about 8 years so I really just wanted typical food. It's hard to find real typical food in populated touristic restaurants. Roy asked us what we were in the mood for and I told him I wanted a meal with chicken and my girlfriend wanted a meal with fish. Roy, whipped us up a true, 100% genuine, home cooked meal that wasn't even on the menu and it was the best mistake I've ever made. Sorry, I didn't take a picture of the meal but both my girlfriend and I devoured it from the moment it hit the table. But here's a picture of the best Banana Cake I've ever tasted. So, visit Roy at the Red Frog Coffee Roaster and give your taste buds amazing, authentic...
