Grande Luna — Restaurant in Grad Hvar

Luna ended up being the restaurant of choice for my birthday when visiting Hvar and it was by far the best meal we had in Croatia. Only the sister restaurant down the street, Giaxa cam close, but the service and atmosphere at Luna was incredible. It may have been the only place in Croatia where the waiter actually carried a conversation with us, he was exceptionally friendly and had excellent recommendations. He had the special quality only great waiters have where you feel like he has your best interest at heart and would protect you no matter what. Or maybe it was just the great food talking. The rooftop was incredible with great stargazing and a nice breeze. No wonder they refer to the stairways up as the stairway to heaven. The decor matches the food which is not overly serious but tasteful and high quality. They knew it was my birthday, but at my wish didn't do a song or anything, and kept it very tasteful. The food was outstanding and definitely the best fish we had in Croatia. The wine was excellent and not too pricey; we ended up getting the same the next night at Giaxa. It was again the waiters recommendation which we continued to follow blindly through the meal, never being led astray or take advantage of as would have been easy in our wine and fish stupor. The saad with greens tomatoes and goat cheese was appropriately Mediterranean and flavorful in a fresh sunny way. The octopus salad was incredible with sliced tentacles doused in a savory spice that only brought out the flavor of the mollusk. This was one of the best octopus we had in Croatia, only potentially beaten by the whole tentacles at Giaxa. We then deferred to the recommendation again and went with the traditional gregada or fish stew, popular across Croatia and the islands. This was bursting with flavor with delicious catch of the day fresh fish in a creamy white wine sauce with potatoes. I will go to my grave dreaming of this fish. This fish gave me cartoon hallucinations of happy cats singing after eating it. Ah to be able to have this every day. As a respectful measure to my birthday, they brought out a flan like custard dessert on the house which was a very nice touch. The custard was nice and soft but firm and had great flavor and sweetness balance. This was absolutely the best meal in Croatia and one of the best I've had. Perfect for a special occasion or just the fish...

If you want a ‘fancy night’ out without paying crazy high Hvar prices, then come to Grande Luna for incredible food and service. We really enjoyed being served by Marko. He was friendly, helpful and fun!

Rooftop dining room with white linen tablecloths and napkins sets the tone for a more upscale meal. Great wine by the glass choices. We had a Plavac Tomič 2017 with dinner. (Later with a yummy cheesecake we paired it with Petra Hectorovich 2016 - Omg!).

I chose a mixed salad and for my main, the homemade pasta in a truffle sauce. Marko explained that the pasta was handmade in Korcula. A very special recipe. This stuff is so GOOD!! Truffle shavings were plentiful in the cream sauce. Very hearty and a lot of food!

My husband said the caprese was best he’s had in Croatia over the last month and he really enjoyed the risotto with shrimp/arugula/sun dried tomatoes. Fresh parmesan was served to the table.

Best meal so far in our 2021 Hvar trip! We will be going back to...

First impression was lacking, we were left sitting for just a little too long before we had to ask a waiter to take our order. This was the theme of the night as service was slow all night, even having to ask for the bill twice! I had fried fish which was very nice in particular the shrimp, very good. My partner had grilled chicken which came only with chips and sauce and looked very bland, a few vegetables would have made all the difference and we just didn't expect such a bare plate. Fries were average. And wine was nice. Venue and setting were nice and prices were fair. The staff were busy to their credit but always seemed to prioritize their own tasks before the customers requests. After requesting the bill the second time one of the staff even seemed to argue with another in order for him to approach us to accept our payment. Some small adjustments to this place could make a...
