We arrived during normal business hours a bit before noon. There was an available table, but we were told that there was a dining tour so we couldn’t sit at the empty table. The staff said that we should come back a half hour later. Not a normal start to things, but not a problem 😊

After half an hour, we came back as directed. We had seen from the establishment across the street that the dining party left shortly after we did. Upon our return, we saw that the dining room had been completely reset for guests and they were still taking to-go orders (as they had been when we first came), but we were told we would have to wait ANOTHER half hour all over again -- even though there wasn’t a single diner and all of the tables were clean and ready!

I'm so glad I stumbled upon Aamanns Deli & Takeaway! This charming deli has become my go-to spot for a quick and delicious meal. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm smile by the friendly staff, who made me feel like a regular from the very first visit.

The service is top-notch - efficient, attentive, and knowledgeable. They take the time to explain the menu, offer recommendations, and even share stories about the ingredients and preparation methods.

But the real star of the show is the food. Oh, the food! The open-faced sandwiches (smørrebrød) are a must-try - fresh, flavorful, and expertly prepared. The rye bread is crispy and dense, the perfect base for the generous toppings. I've tried several varieties now, and each one is a flavor explosion. The ingredients are clearly high-quality and locally sourced, which makes all the difference.

Brilliant toasts, and a required eating for anyone visiting Copenhagen. I recommend the herring and the plaice. The herring has the right amount of pickling to cut against the nutty bread. The topping is salty and fatty to add more depth, with the greens fresh enough to round out the dish with a vegetal wrap.

But the plaice is even better. A relatively thick fillet, lightly fried, with a lovely mayo on top, this I could eat a bunch of. The fish is so so good, and because of the lightness of the breading, the underlying rye bread is still the right base. Other fried fish is done on light brioche breads, but this fish is better with the nutty rye. The dressing on this is also excellent and savory.

Highly, highly recommend. I will try to go back every year I'm in Copenhagen.
