The Dukes Pub — Restaurant in Grasse

I have been visiting Dukes pub now for 5 years, I have never had a problem. We visited last week & had 1 cocktail at €12 and a pastis at €5 so the bill should have been €17. The blonde male bartender came with his card machine so we could pay & held it away from us so we couldn’t see the screen, but we didn’t think anything of this as we have never had problems before. We got home & checked our bank to see we had been charged €27!! When we went back in the morning Albert was very nice about it and gave us 2 free drinks. We thought “hey mistakes happen, let’s not let this ruin our holiday” so we went back the next night and had 2 cocktails €12 each so the bill should be €24.

The same blonde male bartender came before we had received our drinks and asked us to pay. We thought this was odd as we usually pay after we have our drinks but my husband got his card out to pay and the same thing happened AGAIN, the bartender held the machine away from us so we couldn’t see, this time we knew what was going on so we asked how much and he said €35!! We showed him the menu and the prices but he firstly said this was for the extra alcohol he put in the cocktails that wasn’t advertised on the menu, then after debating this he said the extra €11 was his tip. We knew this is what he was doing and totally wrong.

My husband went to talk to the manager, by now the blonde bartender was also talking to the manager telling him the extra he charged us was only a couple of euros. The manager said to my husband to sit and he would get us free drinks but by this time we were done with Dukes bar and couldn’t sit by whilst this waiter was stealing from customers again and again and getting away with it.

We went to another bar just next door and had lovely cocktails and service with a smile! We will not be going back to Dukes pub as the management seem to condone this type of behaviour and think stealing from paying customers is ok. This is not our problem to sort but the...

Although I was here a few months ago, i feel compelled to share my experience so that others don't get misled and end up here. We stopped because we were hungry and most of the nearby restaurants were closed. At the entrance, we said "Hi" but the waiter insisted that we should say it in French. After that, we waited quite a while for them to take our order. I ordered gnocchi with salmon, and after, what felt like and eternity, the food arrived. However, instead of gnocchi, I received tortellini stuffed with cheese and spinach. I immediately called waiter over to tell him that this wasn't the dish i ordered, but he pretended not to understand and insisted that's what I ordered. Then he called his manager, who said the same thing. Since I couldn't eat the dairy at the time, I couldn't consume it, so I ended up eating my boyfriend's food. While I was in the restroom, their chef discretely approached our table to check if that was indeed the dish and admitted that it wasn't what i ordered. In the end they made the correct dish, which was delicious, but I was almost full and only had a taste. I should also mention that they didn't charge us for thr previous incorrect dish, but the service was extremely poor and we also waited over 20 minutes...

I went 2 days. FIVE STARS for the 1st day: The waiter was perfect and very attentive, I had an excellent pizza and 4-5 pastis and thank you for that. ZERO STAR for the 2nd day: They were two waitresses. I saw one to order, she was walking around, she told me it's not her table. I told her just give the order to the right waitress, if she can. Finally the "right" waitress came for the order and she told me, before she serves me my drink, to pay because she is standing inside!!! Before she serves me the drink!!! First time in my life someone asks me to pay my drink before serve it. And that was happening because she had a commis waitress to carry and serve the drinks. She was feeling cold, I guess, standing outside and she was getting payed immediately so she didn't have to go outside again for the same customer. Maybe her clothes were light and that's why she was feeling cold. Very funny service...
