I visited Brasserie Dubillot for what should have been an archetypal romantic Parisian dinner of wonderful French food and flowing wine with my girlfriend on our getaway to the city. However, I am sad to report that our experience was bitterly disappointing and far from the intended “dîner romantique à Paris”.
Firstly, the service. I can’t fault the politeness and friendliness of our waiter, however the service we received was terrible. We ordered a typical French dinner, with cocktails, an entrée of escargot, a côte de bœuf for two, paired with a fine bottle côte du Rhone. However, the snails never arrived, we received a côte de veau instead of the beef. The wine didn’t arrive with our main, once we reminded the waiter (who was quite inattentive), he finally brought over wine (after our “beef” was stone cold). But we received the “bin” wine, not the wine ordered. We took the sensible decision not to order dessert, who knows what random item on the menu we would have received.
If this wasn’t bad enough, once the waiter did finally serve us, he managed to spill a full glass of water over me, soaking my Uniqlo linen trousers through to the skin. Not only this, but he also smashed the glass over the floor and over my foot, drawing blood. We received a short apology, but far from what we should have received. If it had been me, I’d have been mortified.
When the food (that we didn’t order) finally did arrive, the Veal was truly awful. There was more fat than meat.
All considered, our night was completely ruined. There are not the words to capture my disappointment and dissatisfaction at this restaurant nor is there a low enough star rating to summarise how poorly I can recommend this restaurant . I pity the restaurant goers who have the misfortune of turning up at this establishment expecting anything but terrible food and...
Read moreI was really excited to come to this restaurant and made a booking ahead of my trip. I will preface this review by saying I am a restaurant owner and chef myself. We ordered the sirloin for two cooked medium (my 13yr olds request), sausage and mash and tarama. The restaurant was about half full when we arrived, the waiter was friendly and took our drinks order pretty quickly, we received the tarama and it came with blini type bread(it was hard to tell) which was obviously day old and cold so it was pretty disappointing, we then waited for about 40 minutes for our main courses, by this time they had become very busy so the service was slow but this is understandable so I wasn’t that bothered , the waiter checked in with us and we ordered another drink while we waited. When our food came the sausage and mash was good, however the steak was pretty much well done and tasted very charred and bitter, the frites were cold and the dressing was basically just dressed with vinegar so very unbalanced and so sharp. however the worst thing was the peppercorn sauce, it was so runny with absolutely no viscosity and just tasteless. Like I mentioned I am a chef with over 30 years experience and have made steak frites a thousand times and This is by far the worst steak frites I have ever eaten in Paris and I cannot believe they would have let it leave the kitchen. The waiter asked how it was and by this time I just wanted to leave so I told him it was just ok, he asked me to elaborate and I said it was dissapointing but didn’t want to get into it with him but he then proceeded to ask me for a tip😂 I always tip at least 20% but if my staff member requested a tip after a customer was dissatisfied they would no longer be...
Read moreWhat a meal!! We expected to have to wait a long time, given the hour we arrived, but we were lucky and got seated right away.
A very fun and lively vibe inside. The staff were super friendly and engaging and we were given attention by a host of people. Our main server was very affable and able to accommodate a few picky food choices. And also able to adapt a couple of dishes to make them vegetarian.
Initially we had some concerns about being seated so close to the kitchen. There were some super cute looking tables near the front that seemed like they would have made for an enjoyable meal setting, as well as some good people watching, but our fears were misplaced. I actually really enjoyed watching the chef and his staff at work. This is a true chef’s kitchen and watching the team act in unison and watching them gel and laugh in between rushes was a gem!
The Bonne Pioche that started things off was refreshing to say the least. A great combination of fizz, floral flavours and subtlety.
And the remoulade… what can I say …. “Mmmmmmmm”. Great creaminess and crunch and zest (from the mustard).
The steak eaters truly savoured their steaks and the béarnaise sauce was delicious. Watching the kitchen, it was astounding seeing the vat of sauce they had and how rapidly it was being depleted. Clearly a fan favourite. And the frites were perfect.
The green asparagus jus on the spelt risotto was decadent and luxurious and the perfect accompaniment to the risotto and the gorgeously soft-boiled egg hidden under the sea of green and vegetables. I was so full after eating it and it was oh so rich, but so so so good and any subsequent discomfort was well worth...
