We arrived at 19:30 and whilst we didn't have a booking, they were able to offer us a table for 'only 60 minutes'. We ordered 3 drinks at 19:35 and two more at 19:45 (when two more friends arrived). The first three drinks came at 19:50, but at 20:10 the final two drinks hadn't arrived so we asked the waiter and they said they'd check. The drinks only arrived at 20:15 at which point we highlighted that we'd soon be leaving as they needed the table back and therefore we couldn't accept the drinks. One member of our group said we'd take them if they could offer us a discount to which the waiter replied 'of course'. This seemed to work well as the drinks would (presumably) have gone to waste otherwise and we only had time (due to time limit on the table) to drink half the drinks.
When we went to pay however, we were charged the full amount for the final two drinks. When we questioned this, the same server simply said 'you drank the drinks, you need to pay for them'. When we reminded her of the conversation she simply walked off to speak to a colleague. She returned and said could offer us 50% off as a good will gesture which we accepted. My only regret is the tip that the rest of the group had already paid on the assumption that we would be getting a discount without having to discuss it further. Ultimately, had we known how long the drinks would have taken, and the level of discount that would be offered, we simply wouldn't have accepted the drinks as we were able to drink less than half of the drinks in the time they allowed.
It's a shame as the drinks are good, but they're not set up to provide a quick service, and when things do go wrong they're clearly trained to delivery good...
Read moreAt gorki park they've managed to bring back those childhood memories! As a Russian I'm used to mama's home cooked meals. I must say, at first I was sceptical about this place. It's located in Berlin Mitte and has this kind of hipster like vibe to it. Also some dishes on the menu have a "fusion kitchen" character but don't worry, you'll find the traditional Russian dishes on it too. The only Russian beer on the menu is baltika nr.6. Comparable with an Irish Guinness, I guess. They have also beer on the menu which is called "Russian pils" but the waitress told us that isn't actually from Russia. Now let's get to the food. We ordered some traditional stuff and well, except for the not really Russian salad menu caused I've missed some good Russian salads(a caesar salad doesn't turn Russian if you serve it in combination with russian vodka), we suddenly went absolutely in love with it. Seriously the taste of the food was getting near to the home cooked meals my mum and grandma used to cook for us. It can probably never reach that kind of taste but hey it was getting pretty close. That's why we highly recommend this place if you would like to taste some good Russian food in Berlin Mitte!

Read moreA lot of the more negative reviews of Gorki Park complain about the price. It's certainly not cheap but simply walking inside should tell you that it's not supposed to be, but we felt that we got pretty good value for money.
We had a late flight from Schönefeld and didn't want to subject ourselves to airport food so we arrived late afternoon/early evening. The restaurant was fairly quiet but there were other diners. We decided on solyanka and borscht followed by the 'Collective' sharing platter and the mixed dumplings "Datscha" with a rhubarb juice, a birch tree lemonade and a horseradish vodka. The soups were delicious, as were the dumplings. The platter was very good indeed with a variety of hors d'oeuvres including some traditional Russian/east European flavours and some more modern ideas. My partner paid but I think the bill came to €63 which was reasonable.
The decor is pleasant and soothing with muted lighting and lots of mirrors. The staff seemed fine, though we value efficiency over hollow attempts to pretend to be our friend.
We stay close to Rosenthaler Platz every year for Silvester. Gorki Park is just one more...
