Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch — Restaurant in Cologne

Two visits: first was excellent, second was not.

First: efficient and pleasant service and, probably, the best bratwurst I've ever had.

Second: chicken schnitzel was ok, but the service was not. Efficient? Yes. Pleasant? No. It seems that using your beermat to correct the wobble of your table, when that beermat has your beer tally on it, is a capital offence. For context, it was not busy, the waitress was the only person serving my area and I'd had two 200ml beers. Despite this, I received an overlong lecture on how bad it was to destroy the tally beermat. A short clarification of local custom would have been fine, but a long/repetitive lecture was tedious, annoying, and she made it clear that, in her opinion, it was the action of a dishonest person. She 'forgave' me, on this occasion, but I'm sure she'd call the police the next time I attempted to steal more €2 beers (this is how it felt).

Youth lacks experience and so can be over zealous and over simplify - that's forgivable, but there's a limit and this waitress passed it!

In summary: great bratwurst, but not worth being lectured by a child and being accused of the theft...

I went here (twice now) based on the reviews compared to some of the more touristy places, this one seemed authentic. It turns out to be one of (the?) oldest Brauhaus in Köln.

The food is amazing. The Sauerbraten and Bratworst are both excellent and the chicken/orange salad is both healthy and delicious. The brownie/berries is actually a lava-cake style dessert and is excellent.

Service when its crowded can be a bit of a challenge, but I was surprised how responsive they were.

If you have a group and/or the appetite, the 5L beer tube service saves time and is memorable! (I just learned that have a 10L barrel as well)

Had an awful experience in this restaurant. Horrible service. They gave us beers without our asking for it and kept asking if we wanted more beer every two minutes. The food was very good, but our waitress kept asking if we were finished yet when clearly, we weren't. When we asked for a desert, she told us that we only had 20 minutes left so we couldn't get any, when we had only been there for 45 minutes and they did not tell us beforehand that we could only spend a specific time there. Furthermore, we decided to pay by card so she got her pin machine and took our card, and when the transaction was complete she literally threw the card on the table and walked away. In other words, good food but...
