Cubo Negro — Restaurant in Mainz

location - nice, on a small square, next to a preserved ruins of church after the bombardment of allies

interior - nice, themed with dark colours

service - confusing, waiter attending to my table did not understand German nor English very well, I think he was Italian.

food - I asked for gluten free option, I was overjoyed when waiter told me they will do it, they have gluten free buns. BUT... 5 minutes later I learn they ran out of buns, so I told them, ok without bun. Then I received the bun-less burger patty with cheddar, salad, french fries, tomato ketchup, mayo. But the burger was sprinkled in fried onion pieces. These were not gluten free, so I had to return the dish and wait for a re-worked order. Which I then received.

Will I go again to this restaurant? Most probably no. I had a good company, but I do not want to spend money somewhere where I get "downgrades of service on-the-go".

In general, I am fed-up with restaurants in Germany, after living here for 4+ years and travelling the country and trying to get something gluten...

The place has the best burger in Mainz in my opinion. All the other dishes I've tried from the menu were good as well. They make fairly decent classic cocktails. The waiters and waitresses are professional, not students not only students doing a temporary part time job. Still sometimes they lack of that human touch and customer service excellence by being rude to you which is unfortunately cultural in Germany. No negative points for that. The downside is that for some reason the place feels boring. Maybe because of lack of a younger...

Cubo Negro is a vibrant cafe / bistro / cocktail bar that is definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed a lovely meal there with good food and wine. We were welcomed from the outset and service was good throughout our stay. I ordered an Angus steak for my main course, which was a delight. There is a choice of sitting inside or outside. The area is pleasant and is close to the Carmelite Church. Overall, a very pleasant evening and would definitely go back....
