It was my first time at this restaurant and I really loved the atmosphere and the service. The staff were extremely kind and attentive, especially our waiter who gave us recommendations with such warmth.
For starters, we tried the Plato Moctezuma, which was absolutely delicious and a great beginning to the meal.
For the main, our waiter kindly suggested the Enmoladas (Mole Poblano). She mentioned it comes with a spicy chocolate sauce, which sounded unusual but interesting, so we decided to trust her recommendation. Unfortunately, this dish wasn’t for us at all. The plate came with 2–3 small tortilla rolls with chicken inside, black beans, some rice and salad, all topped with the chocolate sauce. The sauce had a very strong flavour that we personally found unpleasant, and sadly it turned out to be the most regrettable choice of the evening. We had ordered two portions and couldn’t really enjoy them.
When another waiter asked for feedback, we were honest about not liking the sauce, and they were very understanding and apologised, which we appreciated.
My suggestion: unless you’re already a fan of mole sauce, I wouldn’t recommend choosing this dish—especially if you’re unsure what to order and are asking the staff for guidance. I’m certain there are many other delicious options on the menu, and we would happily come back to try those instead.
Overall, the restaurant is wonderful, with fantastic service and atmosphere. Just a little note to the kind waiter: maybe keep this dish as a recommendation only for those who specifically enjoy mole, as it’s definitely an...
Read moreWas in Mainz for work and stumbled upon Moctezuma Mainz. It was a short walk from the Hyatt Regency Mainz (also AMAZING hotel)
The pictures online looked okay. But, it's legit. The menu is extensive and includes tacos, real guacamole, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, quesadillas & alambres.
It was so good, we went back two, consecutive nights.
Chips con guacamole: 9/10 excellent & the chips were fresh made in house Beef Chimigchanga: 10/10 Perfect. Added habenero salsa, which was 🔥🔥🔥 Enchiladas Divorcados: 8/10 My husband said the verde was much more flavorful than the roja, but he literally polished the plate. Tacos al pastor: 8/10 the meat could have used some caramelization. Though, the flavor was on point & the salsa verde was perfect for these. Taco combo plate: 10/10 We asked our waitress for her taco recommendation and she told us these 3 are her favorites. She offered these as a mixed plate, not on menu: Hongos Enchipotlados, Cochinita Pibil & Barbacoa. All excellent.
Huge bonus: The menu has amazing cocktails, a good selection of tequila/mezcal AND even Mexican wine from Baja California. 10/10! 🍷🍹🥃
This place is small & popular. We walked in without reservations both weeknights, but I recommend a reservation if you are making the trek. You will have to suffer through local patrons eating tacos with a knife & fork 🫣, but the flavors are worth...
Read more(English version below!)
We had reserved for 8.30 p.m., we were rescheduled to 9.15 p.m. by the restaurant in advance. It was promised in exchange, that the first drink per person would be free. It should be mentioned that the reserving party had been a regular guest there. Upon arrival, the table was still occupied, we were asked to order a drink at the bar, until we finally gout our table around 10 p.m. After that it took still a long time to get the food, but that is already known from many prior reviews. When it was time to pay, the discussions started. One of us who had left earlier and had forgotten to explicitly mention the promised free first drink – and was charged for it. Then a discussion for several minutes began, first the manager wanted to bring us a second free drink instead of the clearly promised “free first drink”, as “only some specific drinks could be given for free”. Finally, the promise was redeemed in a grumpy manner, with restrictions: Another one had had ordered a double rum as first drink, but the manager insisted that she had seen the barman serving a “nearly triple” instead – therefore he had to pay for the one extra rum in the first drink. Very tight-fisted. Of course it was an additional service of offering the free drink, but “promised is promised”, especially for regular guests, and seeming appropriate for 1,5 hours delay. It is absurd, that a discussion about it is necessary in hindsight. Another minus is, that they don’t allow you to pay with debit/credit cards - something that’s not proper for a restaurant in the state capital in today’s times. However, on a positive note, the food is authentically Mexican (unlike anywhere else nearby) and delicious – it is the only reason, why it could be worthwhile...
