Dom- und Diözesanmuseum — Attraction in Mainz

The collection itself and design of the exhibition are really good. It is hard to display church objects in a way that they are interesting for a modern viewer - this museum does it well. Audioguide is very good too.

BUT: info is only in German.

Additionally it is hard to follow the tiny numbers on the display plates with the numbers referring to the audioguide. I lost probably half of the recordings because I was not able to see the relevant numbers. Thirdly, I had seen some rooms and exhibits here in the comments, and I have heard some descriptions on the audioguide (for example, nr 13) that were not to be found in exhibits. I even walked downstairs to ask if I missed some rooms, but I was told I have seen...

The Dom- und Diözesanmuseum in Mainz is a good option if you're looking for an inexpensive activity. We went in to get out of the rain, and it served that purpose well.

Unfortunately, not being able to read German meant I couldn't fully appreciate all the information on display, but that was a personal limitation, not a flaw of the museum itself. Ich war gestern kurz im Dommuseum, nicht, um das Museum als solches zu besuchen, sondern mit einer konkreten Frage zu einem Baudetail des Domes. Die beiden Damen an der Kasse und eine zufällig dazukommende Dame der Domführung konnten mir diese Frage beantworten, dafür noch mal ganz herzlichen Dank. Was ich aber wenige Minuten später als viel wichtiger empfand, war der Tipp, wo man richtig, aber so wirklich richtig guten Kaffee bekommt, nicht direkt am großen Platz, sondern um 3 Ecken herum; Wenn Sie, die Kassendamen, das lesen, lassen Sie mich Ihnen bestätigen: der Kaffe im Dinges ist zum Niederknien gut.
