Zum Franziskaner, a beloved institution in Munich, offers a quintessential Bavarian dining experience. On a recent visit, the star of the show for me was undoubtedly their famous Leberkas Semmel, a simple yet profoundly satisfying dish that perfectly encapsulates the restaurant's charm. Stepping into Zum Franziskaner is like stepping back in time. The atmosphere is authentically Bavarian, with a bustling main hall filled with the clatter of steins and lively conversation, alongside quieter, more intimate dining areas. The service is efficient and friendly, adding to the overall welcoming ambiance.
Now, about that Leberkas Semmel ($$). It's not your average deli sandwich. Here, the Leberkäse is the hero. Served warm, the thick slice of finely ground, perfectly seasoned meatloaf boasts a delightful crust and a tender, juicy interior. It's rich and savory without being greasy, showcasing the quality of the ingredients.
The bread is a crucial component, and Zum Franziskaner delivers. A fresh, crusty roll, often a Kaisersemmel, provides the ideal counterpoint to the substantial Leberkäse. It's soft enough to yield to each bite but robust enough to hold up to the filling. What truly elevates this sandwich is its elegant simplicity. There's no overload of sauces or toppings to mask the quality of the Leberkäse. Often, it's served with a smear of sweet mustard, which provides a lovely tangy-sweet balance, or sometimes just a touch of pickles. This minimalist approach allows the star ingredient to shine. While the Leberkas Semmel is a humble offering compared to some of their more elaborate dishes, it's a testament to the fact that simple, well-executed food can be incredibly memorable. It's the perfect quick bite for lunch, a hearty snack, or even a lighter dinner, especially when paired with one of their excellent beers.
Zum Franziskaner delivers an authentic taste of Bavaria, and their Leberkas Semmel is a must-try. It's a comforting, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying dish that perfectly reflects the heartiness and quality you'd expect from this iconic Munich establishment. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a true Bavarian...

I had a truly unpleasant experience at this restaurant. I ordered a sausage, a Coke, and tap water. The staff repeated, "Tap water and Coke?", to which I confirmed, "Yes." However, what I received was sparkling water. I immediately told them, "This is not what I ordered. I wanted natural tap water, not soda." At that point, the staff started getting frustrated and insisted that I had to pay for the sparkling water.
They took the sparkling water away and brought regular tap water, but they kept repeating that I had to pay every time they brought something to the table. Even when another staff member tried to explain the situation, it didn’t help. A staff member who spoke good English even explained it to them in German, yet the employee still insisted that I pay.
When it was time to pay, I noticed that the bill included the sparkling water I never ordered. I simply wanted to ask about it and said, "I wanna ask you something," but before I could say anything else, the staff member suddenly snatched the receipt, aggressively crumpled it, and threw the card reader at the counter. I was shocked. All I wanted was to clarify the charge, yet the staff member was extremely rude and dismissive.
Feeling upset, I raised the issue with someone who appeared to be the manager, but they did nothing about it. Mistakes happen, but treating customers with such hostility and aggression is completely unacceptable.
I still don’t understand—why was I charged for the sparkling water when they took it away? Is it this restaurant’s policy to bring unordered items, take them away, and still add them to the bill? Or was I just unlucky to get the wrong...
Read moreI would never go back to this restaurant. I visited this place with a group of friends, we were 9 of us. We started off having a good time. We ordered a couple of beers, food and other drinks. 18 drinks and 3 fries to be precise. When we were hungry, we placed the order for food with our waiter Mr.Tran. During the course of placing our order we were asked questions like: ‘Do you even know what you are ordering?’, ‘would you place an order for 6 dishes in an Indian restaurant?’. When we questioned the waiter about his comments, his response was ‘it is peak hour on Saturday’. We looked around and the tables around us were empty. After facing this demeaning treatment from the waiter we did not want to eat there anymore and asked the waiter to cancel our order immediately. The waiter would not cancel our order. We asked to talk to the manager. After a long wait, a manager came to our table to check what the issue was. The superficial manager was not fooling anyone of us with his shallow apologies. we only wanted to pay for our drinks and fries and cancel the food order and get out of the place. The manager offered to cancel the entire bill. But we insisted to pay for our order so far and leave. We did so. I would not recommend this place for the beer which you can find in every other place in Munich, or the fries that are dry, tasteless and soggy, nor the unpleasant waiters who think that they can get away with any misbehaviour towards the customers. There are countless number of establishments who offer top service, tasty drinks and food and most importantly a warm and welcome service in Munich. There is no need to put up with these...
