Ateno was a complete joy & surprise. This is not just a wine bar & sandwich shop. This is the complete culinary experience. Let’s start with the food, which is “hands-down” Michelin star level. We have eaten at multiple Michelin starred restaurants globally (I know, we’ve become those people 🤦🏻‍♂️) & this was up there with the best. I cannot stress how good the food was, from the bread to the Greek salad (🥳), lentil salad and fava tart through to the sea bass kritharoto and sirloin with truffle mash & porcini mushrooms. This is Greek cuisine on another level with produce sourced from primary locations presented with a creative and delicious twist. Next, the wine selection includes the best of Greece & we were steered in the right direction by Jimmy. In fact, the service from Jimmy & the rest of the staff was impeccable - it helped that Jimmy was Australian but it wasn’t necessary that we shared common values - his advice and generosity were amazing. The staff were fabulous managing our group of 4 plus a 7-month old, bringing a baby chair immediately. The “kerasma” at the end was entirely unnecessary but delicious & very welcome. You must try the halva and cinnamon ice cream (🥰). All-in-all a perfect meal. We will be back.

A very special and relatively unique place in the heart of central Athens on Aiolous street. Bistro restaurant with an elevated take on Greek taverna cuisine. They have an impressive selection of home made cured meats/charcuterie which is a must. Long list of cheeses. Few salad and main dishes. While their modern take of the moussaka is nice, if slightly too rich, the beef tongue carpaccio with mushroom steals the show. Ingredients are organic, fresh and super tasty. 10/10. The wine selection is a story onto itself. You can try a wide variety of quality Greek wines, curated usefully by the sommelier. I was grateful to discover a new favorite Greek white here. The atmosphere is very pleasant. Sitting outside in the street, world passing you by, lovely night breeze, and pleasant street music. Place is expensive, but good quality. Service is very good, but for the prices offered and the general vibe, I’d suggest it needs to be more attentive and proactive… especially with regard to the wine. Odd that there was no little offer form the house at the end. Especially considering the bill. Unusual from Greece (generally sign of “tourist profiling” which is a bit disappointing, but cliche). Will return. Will recommend.

Ateno isn’t new to the Athens dining scene—but right now, it’s better than ever. In a city overflowing with concepts and culinary noise, Ateno stands apart with rare clarity and depth. It has fully come into its own, delivering a version of modern Greek cuisine that feels both intellectually rigorous and genuinely delicious. What sets it apart? A refusal to follow trends. Ateno doesn’t serve “fun” sharing plates or dress traditional dishes in buzzwords. Instead, it commits to technique, memory, and a quiet confidence in the raw material of Greek gastronomy. The results are remarkable: flavors that are layered and resonant, plates that show restraint but never feel minimal, and a kitchen that clearly understands when to push and when to stay still. The room is equally balanced—elegant without trying too hard, atmospheric without affectation. Service is sharp, professional, and tuned into the philosophy behind the food. Right now, Ateno is cooking at a level that demands attention. If you care about where Greek cuisine is going—or if you just care about eating well—this is the moment to go.

I am in the middle of my dinner and I could not wait to write this review. I am dining by myself at the counter and I have to say the atmosphere is beautiful. I am Greek and I appreciate fine dining and Ateno checks all the boxes. The atmosphere and lighting is subtle and elegant. The service is impeccable…the wine list is world class…and the food is award winning and delicious does not do it justice. I started with the beef tartare pizza and if you like beef tartare do NOT miss this! It is so special and please take advantage of the Sommelier Simeon…he is so knowledgeable and helpful. I had an elegant Xinomavro with the beef tartar pizza and it was PERFECT! For my main, I ordered the Sea Bream with orzo and he suggested a lovely white wine that is flavorful and accompanies the dish perfectly. The Sea Bream dish is award winning and is not to be missed. The flavors are succulent and original. That is why it is award winning. I haven’t had dessert yet, but I know exactly what I’m going to have and it is my favorite ice cream on the planet…cinnamon. I can’t wait. Everyone is so friendly and they treat you like family…such a Greek gift. If you are looking for a fine dining experience that won’t break your bank, come to Athena!!! This is a must visit...
