Enjoyable fresh seafood in an interesting, mostly street setting. Super nice smiling servers who work hard to please. Attractive price. Started with a plate of mashed fava beans (delicious in their plainness) and fried peppers (tasty, not spicy, and well cooked to the point of near mushiness). I liked that they don’t force a plate of bread on you. Loved our fried seafood combo of sardines, little whole shrimp, and little squid which were dusted with flour and seasoning/salt — nice combo and great with beer, the squid were especially perfect and tender. The seafood pasta was good, nearly sauceless, again squid so very good, but the mussels were a real miss, just not good mussels and then overcooked a little plus to my wife’s horror and aghast etc., a tiny bit of the “beard” of several of the mussels was not trimmed out, I ate that and can confirm I’ve never had mussels with the top of the beard not trimmed off because it was literally hard to swallow and not nice! Ooops. Alas there were only like 4 mussels on the pasta and I am still alive so other than not being good mussels, I am not too concerned. But yeah probably I have eaten mussels like 500 times, and these were like number 498th worse. Just a bad batch I presume, or maybe the gnarly ones are relegated to the seafood pasta? We finished with the whole grilled Dorado which was fresh and well prepared, so enjoyable and yummy. My only unhappiness with this place is that there are few tables inside, normally great by me however their portable tables places everywhere on the street were tiny and had legs designed to maximize discomfort, my large feet were impossibly intertwined in said legs so I had to sit side saddle with my feet hanging down over a sidewalk curb. Table was not at all level and too small (see photos) to hold the food, so not comfortable. Possibly great if you are under 40 years old, not great for semi-large old guys. Oh we also had the rose lady from Istanbul who we smilingly turned away instantly, a kind waiter explained to her at length these people ain’t buying no roses from ya, so scram already. Anyways all good and we’re happy we came here and loved all but the 4 mussels and portable TV dinner tables.

Atlantikos was a truly hidden gem in the Monastriki area. Note that they are not located at the main road as per Google maps (July 2024), but directly opposite across the road, up the alley. Their staff were friendly and greeted my party of two as we walked up the alley. We were guided to a cosy table of our pick as we went just before dinner at 7-ish pm. We ordered their grilled big shrimps, grilled sea bass and steamed mussels. The mussels arrived first and we were blown away at how juicy and sweet they were. The sauce had a tinge of saltiness and spiciness which elevated the dish. Next came the sea bass. Portions was perfect for two and the fish was fresh. We tasted the natiral sweetness of the fish amidst the smokiness on its skin from the grill. As the fish was fresh, its meat had a slightly chunkier texture as opposed to the frozen soft variety. Grilled prawns were large and good. Its roe gave out a thick saltiness which is a delicacy for Asians. Prices at Atlantikos were lower compared to its touristy neighbours in the area. Seeing how locals packed the restaurant as we left at 8pm, we knew we made the right choice for dinner. One of the waiters is also a fan of Smashing Pumpkins, who just held a concert in Athens four days back. He immediately recognised the subtle SP tee my partner was wearing and we shared our concert experience. I gladly recommend anyone looking for cheap and tasty seafood to visit Atlantikos when in Athens.

I had a really disappointing experience at this restaurant. Me and my fiancé sat down at a table for 4 and were told it was their policy not to seat couples at a table for 4. We explained we needed the extra table because we were going to order a lot of dishes, but the waiter dismissed us and said we were not allowed. Not even 1 minute after we are seated against the janky and unstable sidewalk, a middle aged man with his wife are seated at a table for 4 and is greeted very nicely and professionally by the staff. We were shocked at the discriminating difference in behavior. It felt really prejudiced that these two who ordered a dish each could spread their bag and waters all over meanwhile we had to balance all our dishes on top of each other to fit. Of course, as we had previously told the waiter, we ordered a lot. Instead of giving us an extra table for our extra plates, the waiter gave us a used warm bar chair where he placed our food. It felt nauseating that our food was pushed on top of a used chair where a person had just been sitting. But we were pretty much ignored for the rest of the meal by the waiters. Unfortunately, because of this experience, it was difficult to enjoy the food. We just wanted to finish and get out of there. It would have made the world of difference if we had received an apology or at least some kind words from the staff. I cannot recommend this place because of this. The only upside is that it’s very cheap in comparison to the rest of the restaurants we ate at. But with the discriminatory behavior, our money really was wasted. The picture of the chair is before we even received all our food.
