Excellent ouzeri (restaurant specializing in appetizers and dishes that go well with distilled spirits ouzo and tsipouro), in an out-of-the-way square off the city market. The long menu has many of the standards (salads, appetizers, seafood, meat dishes) and some exquisite, innovative daily specials. Unfortunately for foreign visitors, the specials menu is only in Greek and hard to explain (I'm lucky to be a native of Thessaloniki who ended up elsewhere). For example, a dish of shrimp served over chickpeas, tarama (fish roe sauce) and kritama (wild greens that grow on sea rocks) is a masterpiece. So is grilled sea bream served with shaved fennel over an orzo risotto flavored with lemon and turmeric. And appetizers include such fare as Armenian dry beef salami and a selection of the best regional Greek cheeses. So go ahead and get out of your comfort zone and accept the staff's recommendations, you won't regret it. Good selection of wine, beer and of course the signature distilled spirits....

We also enjoyed the bean salad. Service was friendly and we haven’t had to wait long. Some items on the menu might not be available all the time, but you can always find something else you like. The location of the Ouzeri is great. As the name suggests they offer a variety of Tsipouros and ouzos. There was a small mini-table next to the main one, so you could put your used plates or the water bottle / ashtray there, so you have more space on your table.
