Very disappointed with our evening at Sphinx. My partner ordered the grouper and when it arrived it had scales still on it, he simply asked the waiter if it was meant to have scales, the waiter quickly said 'no' and took the plate from him. We then sat there drinking water for 30 min waiting for them to correct the error. The waiting got the better of us and so we asked how much longer the meal will be and he said we didn't order anything. We reminded him of the fish he took back and he responded 'but you didn't want it'. We were shocked - all we had asked was is it meant to have scales, never once did we say we didn't want it (we didn't), and if they did think it's normal etiquette to take a meal and not replace it then why weren't we offered a different meal... or dessert... or the check. Whatever the case being left for 30min in the dark is terrible service.
He then told us we would still have to pay for the meal! Unsurprisingly we agreed to speak with the manager. But instead he brought out the bill (grouper included). Tired of the waiter's amnesia, we got up and had a confusing conversation with the manager who seemed to be aware of the situation as he was lingering around the corner. He gave a series of clumsy contradictory arguments. Firstly it was that we were lying and only one scale was found, then that any scales on the fish are the suppliers fault and finally that if the plate is taken back it means they admit fault however he believed they were not at fault.
We left with my partner hungry and without paying for the grouper (a less resilient diner would have been made to). We paid 75 euro for very bland sweet potato gnocci, a beetroot salad entree which was nice and 2 glasses of wine.
Very poor fine dining experience, very poor service and sadly the worst experience we have had so far on a 2 month trip. Would not recommend wasting...
Read moreVery disappointing dinner. Went there with my boyfriend on our first night in Santorini, upon a recommendation from our AirBnb.
The staff was very friendly and polite, however, the food was unacceptable. I tried black cod, and my boyfriend a steak. We had to send both dishes back, even if we really didn't want to ruin our evening complaining.
The cod was severely overcooked, very dry and tasteless. The presentation was horrible as well. Mushrooms were the only edible thing on the plate - also not great.
The steak -(asked for medium rare) was chewy and not cooked consistently, which may suggest that the meat was frozen. The potatoes that came with it were undercooked.
We then tried a tuna steak - was also overcooked and tasteless. The beef steak on a second attempt was little bit better cooked, but still, the meat quality was plain bad.
We sat on the terrace - the view is okay. Don't expect the "santorini picturesque" setting - below the restaurant there are several ugly ruined buildings and construction sites.
Shame, because the staff is very friendly...
Read moreBooked here for anniversary meal in Santorini. Really unique restaurant just next to yet out of the hustle and bustle of Oia main streets so a cool yet pleasant and peaceful ambience..Decor inside is really nice. Lovely building. Team were really welcoming and the waiter we had was lovely, polite and helpful. And authentic. Authentic service is hard to come by in tourist filled towns like Oia but this place comes across well. The wine choices are plenty and seemed well chosen. A cool board on the wall explains where in Greece they are all from. And the food - pretty amazing too!! Were vegetarian and so chose this place because it some different choices to many other places. They were great. The 'wild green pie" salad particularly had some amazing flavours which I wasnt expecting..I used to eat meat and the menu seemed like I would be spoilt for choice in quality if I still did. Thank you. Oh and the prosecco we had was super lovely and smoothe..This place is probably a hidden gem that deserves to be on a pedestle amongst amazing...
