I ate a late lunch today, the 7th June 2025 at the "Slovakian Brasserie" (the correct spelling is Slovak 🇸🇰 Brasserie but it doesn't matter).
What caught my eye was the seasonal menu that includes csirke paprikas which is one of my favourite dishes.
Seeing it is not strictly a Hungarian restaurant I decided to dine there.
In the past few years I have boycotted Hungarian restaurants (I visit Hungary 🇭🇺 twice or thrice a year and stay for a few weeks every time) because they serve duck liver pate.
It is produced in an especially cruel and unethical way and more so in Hungary than anywhere else in the EU because Hungary refuses to comply with guidelines for animal welfare specific to the production of duck liver pate.
Unfortunately this brasserie also has duck liver pate on the menu.
I discovered it exists on the menu after I had already sat down, ordered beer and expressed my enthusiasm for csirke paprikas to the waitress else I would have left.
The cabbage salad was tasty mainly because it was not swimming in a very sugary "lake" as is often the case in Hungary.
It however lacked chopped parsley and dill which in summer is plentiful and would elevate it to the next level.
Yes it was too sweet but thanks to the organic lemon and black pepper I brought along with me it was enjoyable.
I am surprised by the reviewers complaining about the dish sizes.
I found the dishes to be generous and the service also excellent hence I was happy to pay the 10% service charge and also added an extra 8% above the service charge as I found the prices (also of excellent quality Czech 🇨🇿 beer) to be...
Read moreHonestly, I dont understand how this restaurant / pub got its 4,2 score. First of all, most of the drinks are Czech. There is nothing Slovak over there. Except of the dumplings / "strapacky" maybe. The place is more a pub where they serve food. There was so much food in the menu, that we could not pick one (since I have the feeling if somebody offers a big range of foods, that they will probably lack quality, becuase everything cant be fresh - in my opinion). But we didnt try, so I cant judge that. What we had was a goulash soup. We were in Hungary, I love goulash soup and there is not much you can mess up with this dish. O boy, I was wrong... it was sooooo salty. Either the cook has absolutely no taste (or he was in love...) or there was something wrong with the soup and salt should have covered that. Never again, in my life in this restaurant. Unleass for a beer or starving to death. Never gonna eat there - I made a promise to myself....
Read moreThe only good thing about this was the waiter who tried his best and Staropramen beer. There is no menu in english so it was unreal for us to order food. Authenticity to something “slovak” its 2/10, theres no kofola, slovak beer (Staropramen is czech) and we had no idea if you serve any of iconic slovak dishes (potato gnocchi wish sheep cheese, potato dumpling with sour cream and many more). Only authenticity you get is from the interior look. We expected to have even sk translations but english was problem already so that was too high expetication made upon the name of this place 😅 I would definetely not call it Slovak something. If you want slovak cuisine in Budapest you better look up for a recipe and cook it...
