I wrote a nice review on my previous visit and decided to eat there again.... But -- pet hate -- when I got there at 9.45, I was told that the kitchen closed an hour ago! Advertised closing time 12pm. I crossed Budapest to go there, passing many nice places. Ended up hungry, irritated at 10pm with no choice but to pile into the nearest open restaurant. Am typing this from that restaurant, which I find noisy and overpriced.... But at least it's open when it says it is open
had only one chance for an evening meal in Budapest. I am glad I chose here. Nice food served in a pleasant atmosphere. Very good value for money. (Probably not absolute "first rate" according to gourmets but plenty good enough for the rest of us.) The kindly waitress deserves a special mention because she was dealing with various customers, a lot of them speaking their own languages (including me). One customer was being a little awkward but she remained polite and helpful. Food was brought promptly, empty plates removed quickly and empty glasses were offered refills. I was thinking a good tip was appropriate but actually they decline any...
Read moreWe have recently been staying at the hotel opposite this particular Bistro & due to it's popularity we struggled to get a table in the first instance. I have to say it was one of the best meals we had whilst being in the capital (the other being a pizza place just round the corner on the main road!) The food at Matula was perfectly cooked & presented and with such a wide variety of dishes on the menu; it was really difficult to make a choice. I started with baked camembert ( which really was a meal in itself) followed by a grilled trout. The trout was marginally overcooked, but still delicious. The previous day I'd enjoyed the catfish at the bistro - huge pieces of flavoursome fish cooked in a light coating. They had a wide selection of cocktails and other alcoholic drinks (including an array of palinkas) at very reasonable prices. We paid approximately £17 for a hearty, homemade 2 course meal with a drink. Excellent value and I'd have happily returned again for the 3rd...
Read moreThis bistro is fabulous. I stayed at the Marmara and had several dishes over my short break in Budapest. The duck with cherry and cinnamon sauce was amazing!
On my last night, I had another duck dish at a well-rated Hungarian restaurant but it was so bland I couldn't finish my meal. Instead I returned here, not because I was desperately hungry but desperate for something tasty. I had the boar with red wine and blueberry compote, it did not disappoint.
The pricing is fair, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the staff were very polite and friendly - thank you Cynthia!
I had to congratulate the chef. What a lovely man! If I had the luggage allowance with Ryanair I would have kidnapped him... to cook for me forever in England. Is he for sale?? 🤣🤣
So 10/10. I can't wait to come back the next time I'm in Budapest. Thank you for the wonderful food and...
