My partner and I were looking for a quiet, relaxed ambience off the main street for our last night in Ubud. We just simply could not have chosen a more wonderful dining experience. This place is called " Cafe des Artistes" but the food, drinks, service and ambience of this establishment would clearly be more suitability labelled as a " restaurant " and a very stylish and professionally run one at that. From the very outset we were drawn into the establishment by the warm and welcoming staff. The menu is clear and easy to navigate, with something to pretty much appeal to anyone and everyone. The drinks menu was also an absolute delight. We ordered 2 starters to share. A pork Pate dish (Patè des ardennes) served with a wonderful sweet onion confit accompaniments and a bread basket. Also a grilled king prawns dish, Grilled Prawns Diabolique A slightly spicy tomato, bell pepper and brandy cream sauce. Served with breadbasket. Wow, absolutely delicious! With great attention spent on presentation also. Mains we chose were a 280g locally sourced tenderloin steak with broccoli gratin, garlic mash potatoes and a pepper sauce. ( you can choose from a selection of sides and sauces). My partner chose a giant skewer dish, Brochette “Des Artistes” Giant meat skewer with chicken filet, beef filet, lamb and chorizo sausage. Served with a mixed salad and baked potato. Choice of mushroom, pepper or Provencal sauce. Being a bit of a steak aficionado I have to admit that I was wary about ordering a locally sourced steak in Bali (they offer Australian steak also). The waiter asked me how I would like my steak cooked. I selected medium rare. The meals were brought out together in a timely and very professional manner, allowing time to savour and digest between courses. The steak arrived absolutely perfectly cooked as I had requested (medium rare). The steak was juicy, absolutely tender, full flavoured and just perfect in all regards. The giant skewer was a fantastic and beautifully presented mix of , beef fillet, chicken, lamb and chorizo. Both of our meals were just delicious, tasty and beautifully presented. I am not sure who owns or runs this restaurant, but they clearly care and have got it 100% right. Many thanks for a most enjoyable evening. It is so good to see such a well run restaurant. I 100% recommend that you try this restaurant if you are in Ubud Pricing was very reasonable, our overall spend indicated in my review was including 3 x glasses of wine each and 1x cleansing Ale each!!!!! (Approx Australian $ total for...
Read moreThis is an upmarket, yet relaxed place to visit.
I had planned to have a glass of wine, but there was none on the menu, so opted for the strawberry daiquiri, which was on the happy hours drinks list (68,000idr) - which was delicious.
I ordered the grilled salmon. It came with the most delectable sauce, on French beans and beautifully flavoured potatoes. Unfortunately, some of the salmon was slightly undercooked. Not raw, but slightly darker flesh when compared to the rest of the fish.
I decided not to risk is and left these bits. The rest of the salmon was beautiful though.
If I'd stopped here, I would have given a 3 star review.
However, another strawberry daiquiri and dessert soon changed that. The chocolate meuilleux was to die for! Served hot with vanilla ice cream and strawberry coulis, it was astoundingly good!
Good feature - presented with a white tablet on a small dish with water.... you pop the tablet into the water et voilà , it soaks up the water and becomes a towel to wash your hands.... I loved that. Must appeal to my childlike nature 😉
The wall in the restaurant has the artwork of a featured artist and I really liked the pieces on show - such a shame I can't fit them in my suitcase or I would have bought one. 😔
I may have been unlucky with the salmon, so I wouldn't rule this place out. The menu has a good range of European food, mainly erring towards French cuisine.
And the atmosphere makes you feel like you are treating yourself. It was the most expensive restaurant so far (387,000idr) during my Bali trip, but I did feel pampered and got to dress up a bit for...
Read moreThis place is trying so hard but unfortunately didn't quite hit the mark with us. We've only recently spent 2months in France which probably didn't help their quest with French cuisine. Food was mediocre, my partner had the escargot (snails), they had so obviously had been in the freezer and microwaved to defrost and heat as they were at the table too soon swimming in garlic sauce. I had a steak for my main and whilst it was OK for the price it should have been better, the baked potato still wrapped in foil beside it did make us chuckle. My partner had the fish which was nice, but again was swimming (probably not the best choice of words) in a butter sauce (maybe should have just been a wee jug of sauce on the side). Staff were delightful and I didn't even have to pay for a cocktail i ordered by mistake even though it was completely my fault! (There's not many places would have done that). 5 stars for customer service guys even though we thought the French cuisine was lacking slightly.... Not much atmosphere whilst we were there but it was between lunchtime and teatime so.maybe nicer in...
