Been to this place quite a bit. Every time someone visits the family in Dublin we take them here. The last two times we've had a very bad experience. When we've walked in , we've been "greeted" with a dead smile from one of the wait staff on the second floor. "Yes?" They asked as we were clearly wasting their time it seemed. "A table for 3 adults and two kids, please" I say. In a very dry / scolding way they ask us to "no. You wait here!"
We're seated by the lovely bartender who's very polite. We sit down and the same person who greeted us takes our drinks order. "I'll take a Sweetmans mild please" I say. They, in a very harsh scolding way say: "mild? What is mild? We have Stout, blonde, pale ale... (And the rest of their catalog spouted out in the span of 3 seconds).." "oh, I'm sorry, I though I saw a sign downstairs stat said Sweetmans mild, I had it last time I was here" I say. "Do you mean the seasonal or the cask?" They say. (At this point I'm quite shocked by the sharp scolding I've been receiving from the person) "Eh, not sure, whichever the mild was, what's the seasonal, I'm sorry I don't work here, I have no idea which one is the seasonal" "It's NOT mild, we have a red alert on nitro is that what you mean ?"
"Sure, sounds good"
When they walked away, I go back downstairs and check the sign again. "Seasonal: Sweetmans Mild"
I go back upstairs and find the person again and ask "is red alert order was in already, because I think we had a misunderstanding, I saw this sign (show the picture) and if I could get that instead of the red ale)?"
"We don't have mild, we have red ale. I should know I work here"
"Alright, thanks"
Was very close to walking out and not coming in again, but I've had (mostly) good experience here in the past. Except for the last two times where this same person has been serving. Typing this at the table, excusing to my family who I convinced that this place was worth it. They experienced the same level of rudeness from the same person.
Only giving 2 stars because the bartender was...
Read moreIf you are in anyway dressed alternative avoid avoid avoid. (Otherwise you'll be grand) Me and the missus went in on a Saturday afternoon for a quiet pint before we got the bus home as everywhere else was packed in town just a quiet pint no fuss and for clarity I'm a punk lad like to wear mad colourful tartan trousers and docs etc.....place is massive took a while to find somewhere but we found the basement was completely free as it had been just opened for a roll over of people to go to, so we went down got our seats after that the lad downstairs told us bar is only open upstairs now I go up and order our drinks and the fella behind the bar turns to the other fella and goes "is he okay do want me to take care of it? Blah blah "but can we serve him here" etc while looking back at me .. now fair enough if a place has a dress code that's the rules they want to keep a vibe I get it but bare in mind they have been happy enough to take my money twice before anyway I get served and get back downstairs at this point I'm ticked off to all hell. After a while I go out for a smoke there are a few people out smoking around the door and the minute I light up I get told by a bouncer "can't have you smoking here, move over there" pointing to a place to lock your bike on the edge of the curb so there I am sat up against this bike yoke looking at about 10 other people smoking were I was standing without issue and when I went back in I finished my pint and left won't be back..... to all the other alt people reading this they'll be happy to take your money but they'll sure treat you something different entirely they should post a dress code honestly if they have an issue like I obviously don't intentionally want to go somewhere like that. 2 stars...
Read moreMy husband and I were visiting Dublin for a couple of days on a UK vacation. We popped into J.R. Mahon’s for a late lunch, intrigued by its beautiful exterior, liking the posted menu, and happy for its proximity to our hotel. The atmosphere inside was terrific; relaxed, charming, friendly. In reading the history of the establishment, we loved realizing that we had picked a genuinely historic pub! Our order was promptly taken and we were promptly served. The food was what we believe to be traditional Irish cooking, the presentation was beautiful, and it was delicious! We enjoyed a relaxing meal at a leisurely pace. The only problem was that it got a bit too leisurely at moments, with no one checking in to see if we wanted anything or were good, and we had to go over to our server to be helped. The place was not busy at the time as it was more an off hour for lunch. This aside, we absolutely would recommend J.R. Mahon’s. There was simply so...
