The Ultimate Irish Pub Experience: Murray's Bar

Made a reservation for 4 at 7pm on a Saturday a couple hours in advance, and were seated in the “James Joyce alcove” which was great for us because it was quieter but still a lovely atmosphere. The waitstaff were SO attentive throughout our 2 hours there; at least 5 different servers regularly checking on us throughout our meal. For appetizers we had the fried Brie (good fry, not too melty) and BBQ cauliflower wings (great flavor); entrees were beef and Guinness pie (very flavorful gravy, great portion), Irish stew (smaller portion but delicious), roast Irish beef (huge portion, dry spots in meat but still good), potato and Guinness soup (technically an appetizer but a massive portion, unfortunately much more pepper than I expected), and garlic parmesan skinny fries with roast garlic mayo (delicious!). Caught the live band at about 8:30 and were told by another patron that they were well-known musicians, so that was a nice surprise. The interior is so fun to look at, and it’s a deceptively large restaurant. Would come back again to sit at the bar or Biergarten and get another perspective!

We stopped at this pub on two occasions for a nightcap as it was close to our hotel. The bar part of the pub is really great, with friendly and attentive staff, good vibe and live Irish music in the evenings. On our last day we also decided to have a late lunch at this pub, prior to leaving for the airport. I do regret this decision and not having read the reviews on food beforehand. The restaurant part of the pub is beautiful actually, so nicely decorated, but the food was below average. Firstly, the order was served in less than five minutes. I never waited so little for food in a restaurant/pub/whatever. We ordered the Guinness and beef stew which was stale, there was no hint of Guinness, just a lot of tomato paste. Also ordered the Parmesan and truffle burger. While the bun and meat were ok, there was no hint of Parmesan, nor truffle. Service was also a bit cold and off. Not to mention the prices for the food, which were actually some of the highest we paid while in Dublin, and all this for mediocre dishes. So do yourself a favor and don't eat here.

Giant venue, shame about the service! Food very very average, an OK experience. Will not be coming back anytime soon.

MY EXPERIENCE: Specifically made a booking with a request to be seated within the vicinity of TVs to watch the Leinster Munster Pro14 game on a Friday night. Staff replied saying they’d put me and my partner in the sports bar.

We arrived and were put upstairs which is very nicely decorated and modern, into a corner area which is very obviously the “SPORTS AREA” as it has 4 big screens (see photo attached). The volume wasn’t on for the match, they were playing Taylor swift songs and other chart music.

I asked twice if I could have the volume on for the game. As soon as they did put it on, a few other people around me immediately seemed delighted and it gathered interest for the match. It was very clear that they were able to control the sound in different areas of the large upstairs restaurant / bar, as our sports area had the volume and other areas still had the music, great compromise!

As soon as the second half started, a new couple came in and requested to watch soccer on another screen in a smaller area of the bar, that’s fine! As soon as they put this on the rugby match volume went off again. A complete joke to be honest. A few other groups of people had very obviously came in to watch the rugby game too and were disappointed. It was the main attraction in any bar in Dublin last night and it was on all 4 screens in our area. We didn’t even bother to ask again.

THE FOOD: Very average. Really don’t see what all the great reviews about, they either don’t know quality food or are tourists who don’t eat Irish food around Dublin all that regularly.

THE STAFF: Didn’t want to be there, running around like headless chickens. I was there from 7:30-10pm and I got served 3 drinks. Every time my pint was empty I had to look to try and get the attention of someone as they were nowhere to be seen. One of the servers didn’t respond at all to my request to turn the sound on. I went downstairs to the busy atmosphere in the outdoor area where the big outdoor screen was, very very busy and a bouncer immediately put his arm across me and told me to leave if I have no table, I explained to him I wanted to see if there was a spot for us and he hurried me on back upstairs.

Summary: Don’t believe the hype of the other reviews, very average Irish bar on O’Connell St which obviously only cares about tourists. Serving average, ordinary bland food and...

Murray's will forever be among our happiest memories, here's why, check out the story:

We were in Dublin at the beginning of May 2024, excellent trip to Ireland, fully planned and organized by my lovely wife, like all the other trips. We stayed at a hotel nearby Murray's, so we chose this location twice for dinner. We would have enjoyed some music later on but tables were all booked and kids were tired anyway, so we stayed around shortly, but long enough to enjoy an amazing full dinner and obviously some beer.

At one time, my family suggested to order on the menu the "Pour Your Own Guinness" challenge which included a course with the bartender and a final customer certificate. It seemed fun, a good family moment, so I purchased. We did the course and enjoyed it but unfortunately they ran out of certificates, none available, all sold out!

I paid for something I didn't receive on the spot and that we all expected to have as a souvenir. I also struggled on the timetable to come back to the pub twice to seek the certificate without success, the personell was extremely kind and provided general manager's email. I wrote it down, but thought to myself that I would be unlikely to receive furher attention since I would have been abroad in few hours......imagine our disappointment!

Back home, I wrote an email to the general manager who replied and apologised on behalf of Murray's and told me he would send a certificate out to me if I provided an address, which I did, and he would also add a few things for kids and wife as form of an apology, good will I truly appreciated, exciting!

After a first shipment gone lost, I just opened the second shipment and found my certificate and nice gadgets which I won't post 'cause I don't wanna spoil it for future customers!

I feel good, fairness is worth even one more star if I could give one in this rating. Courtesy up to the Irish standards I had the previledge to receive in such a wondeful city and...

Sad to write this review. We made a booking for 7 on Friday to celebrate my friend’s birthday. One of the reason that we picked this place is because it offers live music and Irish dancing show. We were communicated that we will be charge 12.58 as a service charge (which we were fine with) and that we were not be able to split the bill. However, we were mentioned that we can pay with 3 different cards. During the dinner everything was smoothly and nice, our waitress Sandy and Andres were really nice. Randomly, one of the waitress came to our table with the bill and let us know we need to pay atm and we were just able to pay with one card. Her name was Erin, but she never served us at all. I was confused since the information didn’t match what was communicated to me before. I mentioned if she can give us some time to organize ourselves and also explained I was offered to use 3 cards too (this was in the middle of the Irish show and definitely we want to enjoy too). She agreed and went back after 3 mins (definitely not enough time). Her attitude was even more rude and aggressive and insisting if we were ready. And here was my bottom line. Erin’s ruined our night at this bar. It totally makes sense to me that waitress need to close the tables but her attitude is definitely unacceptable. She was harassing us to pay. One of my friend went to the toilet and she asked him if we were going to pay now. We were astonished. I don’t know what she expected us to do but she was crossing the line. I talked with one of the coordinators about it since all my friends complained about her attitude. We were happy to pay a service charge to waitress that treat us nice but not to someone that don’t serve us and even worse treat us with bad manners. If you have the chance to visit Murray’s Bar you’re gonna have a nice night but I...
