The Dublin Portal is a public art installation that serves as a visual bridge, connecting people in Dublin with people in other distant cities via a large, circular, 24/7 live video screen.

In Dublin, it's on North Earl Street, facing O’Connell Street, near the Spire and the GPO.

Original Connection: it was first launched in May 2024, connecting Dublin with New York City's Flatiron South Public Plaza.

Current Network: The New York-Dublin connection closed in September 2024, but the portal is now part of a rotating global network, connecting Dublin with other cities like **Vilnius, Lithuania, Lublin, Poland, and Philadelphia, USA

Concept: Created by Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, the project aims to foster a sense of global unity and connection by inviting people to wave, dance, or use signs to interact in real-time.

Controversy: Shortly after its launch, the Dublin-NYC connection went viral due to instances of people on both sides engaging in inappropriate behavior (flashing, offensive images), leading to a temporary shutdown and the installation of a blurring feature and limited hours.

Despite the initial drama, it remains a popular and unique landmark for tourists and locals to share a quirky moment with...

My Experience with the Dublin Portal

I recently visited the Dublin Portal, and honestly, it was such a unique and fascinating experience. If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s this live-stream video installation that connects Dublin with another city in real-time (when I went, it was New York). It basically looks like a giant circular screen where you can see people from the other side of the world – live! No filters, no delays. Just real human connection.

At first, it felt a bit strange – people waving, dancing, holding up signs. But the more I stood there, the more I realized how cool it was to share a moment with someone thousands of miles away. It was like the world suddenly felt a little smaller and more connected.

What I loved most was seeing the genuine reactions from people on both sides. Kids were jumping in front of the camera, couples were sending hearts, and you could see strangers just smiling at each other. It was all very wholesome.

If you’re in Dublin, I definitely recommend checking it out – especially if you’re into art, technology, or just curious about new ways people are connecting. It’s not every day you get to wave at someone across the ocean and have them wave back at...

Baby welcome to the Party!

(Verse 1) Yo, it's the Dublin Portal, peepin' into New York, North Earl Street where the vibes never short, Pop Smoke holdin' it down in the Big Apple, But in Dublin, we got our own rap battle.

(Chorus) Dublin Portal, seein' through the distance, Connectin' worlds, no resistance, From Ireland to New York, we keep it real, Dublin Portal, it's the deal.

(Adlibs) Yeah, yeah, you know what it is, Dublin Portal, makin' moves, never miss, Pop Smoke lookin' down, showin' love, North Earl Street, reppin' from above.

(Verse 2) Through the Portal, we see the city lights, New York to Dublin, it's a beautiful sight, Pop Smoke's legacy, livin' on strong, In the Portal's gaze, we all belong.

(Chorus) Dublin Portal, seein' through the distance, Connectin' worlds, no resistance, From Ireland to New York, we keep it real, Dublin Portal, it's the deal.

(Adlibs) Yeah, yeah, one time for Pop Smoke, Dublin Portal, where dreams evoke, North Earl Street, holdin' it down, In the Portal's view, we wear the crown.

(Outro) Dublin Portal, bridgin' gaps with ease, From New York to Ireland, feel the breeze, Pop Smoke's spirit, forever alive, In the Dublin...

NYC and Dublin simultaneously installed an exciting digital signage piece, called Portal. It’s always on, there’s a continuous livestream, and people love this thing. They are basically two big circular sculptures with rounded screens in the middle. The displays provide a 24/7 live stream allowing the seamless “portal.” It’s a cool way to interact with people on the street and a new tourist attraction in both cities. The idea is to connect people from across great distances, and crowds have gathered to wave at each other, play rock paper scissors,s or do dance-offs. The two screen portals have some of the best locations. The NYC one is situated next to the iconic Flatiron building. As for Dublin, it’s located on the vibrant O’Connell Street. This ensures that there’s always someone “on the other side.” Fun fact: I have been to both sides. I am from New Jersey and have been to this portal in NYC and now this time, I was on the other side. By the way, the Portal on the US side has been moved to Pennsylvania.

I lived for almost a decade in Ireland and have family history with New York though I’ve never been yet so when I visited Dublin the last time I had to visit the Portal! :) it was an overall super positive experience with lots of happy people around just soaking in this connection. I was glad to see such a great atmosphere at this part of Dublin which is usually just crowds of people in their own bubble due to the nearby shopping street. I’ve also seen one of the first Portals in Vilnius before so next time I’m in Dublin will for sure visit again to see it this time from the other side (thanks to the rotation).
