Category: Hotel Restaurant. After braving Capri’s frantic Marina Grande and the lengthy taxi queue to venture to the City Center, then after running the tourist gauntlet from the taxi drop-off to the frenzied piazza, we searched for a quiet place with few (or at least fewer) people. We found such solace at the serene patio pool-side restaurant at the Syrene Hotel. You might think this name was ironic or appropriate but “syrene” actually means siren. As we relaxed and enjoyed Sirenity Now (pun intended) at our table under the lemon arbor with HHLs (huge honkin’ lemons), my first thought was that this idyllic spot was Far From the Madding Crowd (Thomas Hardy fans rejoice!). The lush arbor shaded us from the sun but also from the Madhouse that is Capri on a Sunday afternoon in early September. A glass of wine, an excellent toss-it-yourself Caesar-style salad, and sophisticated service later, we were ready to brave the hoards once again (we liked the tossing part). But I will fondly recall this oasis in a desert of chaos. Tip: the taxi queue can be withering.
