After reading reviews of this restaurant, we decided to try it for lunch. A huge mistake! It's a complete rip off. Here's what we had: 2 bowls of veggie soup, an order of gnocchi (which were ricotta balls, no dough - perhaps 6/8 of them), a quiche with veggies/salad on the side containing just a couple of leaves of lettuce, broccoli which was mushy, a couple of small potatoes, a couple of pieces of cauliflower - very small plate, a half littre of house wine & a bottle of water for 46euros! A complete rip off. The "kindly" proprietress charged us 14euros for the gnocchi! Only thing missing was a mask - a complete bandit & this restaurant is a rip off! Italians would NEVER pay 14euros for a small dish of "pasta". She has 2 prices - one for tourists & one for natives. This practice is very sad to me. It's illegal in the U.S. & most other countries. On top of this, the food is average. I can usually tell how good a restaurant is by their bread & this restaurant doesn't have good bread. AVOID THIS RESTAURANT! There are too many good places in Como to waste your time...
Read moreWe love this place and the food they serve and have eaten here over the years many times. In fact, we always eat here at least once when we come to Como from Zurich. For us, it is a must. The owners are friendly but sometimes take a few minutes to warm up, perhaps especially to those who don't speak Italian. The woman who handles the orders at the tables can discuss the food in many languages. For those who say they have been turned away in the early evening when nobody was there due to the restaurant being "full" you must keep in mind that Italians generally don't sit down for dinner in a restaurant before 7:30-8:30PM so it is likely that although the restaurant was nearly empty as you say, it was fully booked for that evening. This is a small, family restaurant. Come in quietly, be very respectful, speak a few words of Italian in your greeting, ask politely if your language is spoken, etc. Weekend evenings it is almost always fully booked, so be prepared. Go at lunchtime! It is also...
Read moreWe had a very bad experience at Osteria del Gallo. We ordered a table for 9 and they confirmed that they have room for us, the table was very small that we had to literally huddle, it was so hot and crowded that it was really uncomfortable to sit (not to mention even the covid issue, which was not at all pleasant to sit in such a crowded place). We waited an hour for the first course (we ordered just focaccia and prosciutto ...), and another hour for the second course, they really couldn't handle the load (not to mention the kids really went crazy), and the dishes were not tasty, I have to say that non of them was good. They filled a small restaurant with too many tables and too many people and at the end it was crowded and everyone were waiting too long for their dishes. The experience was very very bad for us and I will never come back to this...
