Sasso di Dante is a hidden gem with amazing food; jovial, attentive service and a wonderful view of the miraculous Duomo. The restaurant is tucked in a quiet corner, past a newsstand, the gate of which features a powerful mural of Dante, the masterful poet, himself. The outside dining area provides a pleasant, authentic experience that will remain one of the fondest memories of your time in Firenze.
Fellow Dante fans, which should be everyone visiting the birthplace of the Renaissance, will enjoy the added bonus of seeing, as legend has it, the very stone on which Dante perched himself to work on his writing while observing the Duomo's construction - hence the name, Il Sasso di Dante. The interior walls of the restaurant are adorned with memorable lines from Dante's epic cantos.
Turn away from the hoards lining like cattle outside of pump-n-dump establishments with 20-page menus or those with carnival barkers begging you to enter. We dined at Sasso Di Dante on our first night in Florence; and on our second night, we fled from ZaZa, a glorified Olive Garden, after what was becoming an awful experience. Returning to Sasso di Dante for a second visit saved our night and our meal was perhaps even better than the first.
Our meals: ravioli (best my sister ever had, she said), Caesar salad (best my mom ever had, she said), chicken parmesan (same compliment all around), lasagna, gnocchi and carbonara, all of which were fantastic, fresh and delicious.
I'll be back to Il Sasso first thing my next visit to Florence, which is guaranteed as I rubbed the Boar's nose and...
Read moreWe had an unforgettable evening at Sasso di Dante in Florence. Nestled just steps away from the Duomo, this gem of a restaurant combines authentic Tuscan flavors with a cozy, romantic atmosphere that perfectly captures the charm of Florence.
The food was absolutely divine—every dish was cooked to perfection, from the fresh handmade pasta to the beautifully grilled meats and local wines. You can tell the ingredients are top-quality, and the attention to detail in presentation and flavor is outstanding.
What truly elevated our experience, though, was our server, Rafaelo. He was warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable—not just about the menu, but about Florence and its culinary traditions. His recommendations were spot-on, and he made us feel like honored guests rather than just customers. Rafaelo made our evening truly special—his passion for hospitality shines through in everything he does.
If you're visiting Florence, Sasso di Dante is an absolute must. Come for the incredible food, stay for the unforgettable experience. And if you're lucky enough to be served by Rafaelo—you’re in for a...
Read moreTourist Trap - Don't eat here. Wait staff was rude and decided to lecture us, walk a little further and eat somewhere else.
We were walking in the rain and the guy at the front asked if we wanted dinner or drinks (it was 5:30 PM). We told him just drinks, he seated us inside and we were the only people there. The waiter took our drink order and asked if we were ready to order food. We told him we were just doing drinks (as discussed with the first person). He then proceeded to lecture us that we should have informed them prior to being seated since this was a restaurant. Got it, we did. Then he complained about it for another 2 minutes, proceeded to get our drink order wrong, then was rude the rest of the 20-25 min we were there.
Yes I know it was a restaurant. Yes we said we only wanted drinks. No one else was there and we were out before dinner time. Apparently that was too much of an inconvenience for him. All that said, take your money elsewhere. There are plenty of better restaurants (I have eaten here in the past, the food was mid) with nicer staff. Keep walking...
