We brought our group of six to Il Vineto on a balmy Monday evening in August and sat outside. We made the reservation online, and about 10 minutes later my phone rang and it was our wonderful waiter Marco calling to ask us if we had any special requests or food allergies and whether we wanted to sit inside or out. We arrived around 9pm and sat outside in a very comfortable and lovely seating area. Marco was amazing – funny and engaging.
Marco asked if he could recommend a set of antipasti and I'm glad we accepted – bruschetta, salame, calamari, roasted vegetables, and a delicious, interesting cheese plate. The wine selection was great, and the Negroni I had was well-balanced and refreshing. The pastas we had – lasagne ai funghi, pasta carbonara amatriciana – were delicious and the pasta fresh. We also had Bistecca alla Fiorentina, and roasted spigola (sea bass) which was the special and both were outstanding. For dessert – tiramasu and panna cotta – both wonderful as well – with limoncello and amaretto that were served chilled by stirring in ice rather than on the rocks, which we appreciated also. All in all the food was great and the prices reasonable for a nice restaurant in a touristy part of Rome.
The highlight though was Marco and his comrade, Franco. They paired up taking care of our party, trading gossip and jokes about each other in each take. They were really funny and charming and made the evening extra special. Certainly, there are times when you are not in the mood to interact in that way, and Marco and Franco were definitely reacting and interacting with us reading that we welcomed that intense interaction. There were other tables around us where Marco and Franco were friendly but left the diners to themselves.
It was a more expensive night, but we were in a festive mood and had ordered several bottles of wine, oysters, appetizers, you name it. We loved our experience and thank them for their...
Read moreWe made a reservation through our hotel in Rome. and thought it would be a wonderful dining experience. We arrived early and sat at one of their sidewalk tables for a cocktail prior to dinner.. Our reservation time came and went and we were told a table would be ready shortly. a half hour later we were seated in the front noisy, busy, bar area instead of in the dining room where there were tables that were empty. I asked for a better table and we were accommodated to a very nice table for 2. The noisy showy waiter took our order, we split an appetizer and a pasta plate and each ordered the baked fish from the menu. The waiter said not to order the 2 fish dishes as it was a whole fish for 2 (30 euros) We agreed we only needed the one order. This fish was baked in a salt crust and boned tableside with great fanfare. When we received our bill at the end of dinner we were charged 80 euros for the fish and there was also a salad that we were billed for but didn't order. My husband brought it to the waiter's attention that there was a error and he disagreed and said that the 80 euros was the price of the fish. CLEARLY he was lying and knew it but would not. adjust the bill. My husband hates confrontations and so said lets just get out of here and paid the bill with NO TIP! Also, a couple from Spain were seated at the table next to us and had a similar problem with their bill and were arguing with the same waiter when we left. OBVIOUSLY they prey on foreigners knowing that they are scamming us. The fact that they will never see us again doesn't bother them at all. STAY AWAY FROM THIS RESTAURANT. There are so many good restaurants in Rome don't get scammed by...
Read moreI would give this place less than one star if I could - they clearly prey on tourists and charge outrageous prices for subpar food. I didn’t want to go here but it was late and near our hotel so we didn’t have a lot of options. When we sat down, waiter kept asking if we were Jewish (we are not) and insisting we were (???) I guess because of our features (we are part Lebanese) but it seemed kind of racist to be honest. I don’t know what it’s like inside the restaurant but on the side of the street at least the waiter pressured us to order more food than we wanted and said it’s what is done in Italy (bullshit). I mistakenly ordered a Caesar salad (don’t order those in Italy because it’s not an Italian creation anyway - but I was so desperate for vegetables after a carb heave day) and it was honestly inedible. When I couldn’t finish it the waiter was so offended and rude he threw a fit basically shaming me and it was embarrassing. My mom mistakenly also tried to take a bottle of water from the table (honest mistake) as we didn’t finish it and she was practically chased down the street...
