We've eaten at many restaurants all over Italy and 'O Canonico 1898 is by far the best and now our favorite. On our last trip to Sorrento we ate there three nights in a row and each meal was better that the night before. Marco and his brother treated us like family which meant a great deal to us. Prosecco starts every meal and it only gets better from there. The wine list is awesome, we drank an incomparable Tenuta Luce -Lux Vitis, an intense Cantina Di Negrar Amarone Classico and and a local falanghina that was light and fantastic. The salads were made with fresh local ingredients that Marco serves personally. The main dishes varied from night to night with the fish being very fresh and delicate, the meats done excellently. The fish stew in the bread bowl is a must and the fried stuffed squash flowers were crisp and flavorful. The cheese/mushroom ravioli were colorful and delicious. Desserts, well the desserts were just out of this world; if you do nothing else in Sorrento you must sample the desserts at 'O Canonico; the "frozen peach" cannot be adequately described in words, it can only be eaten to know it. The service is first class all the way; we were treated to the special hand-blown wine glasses which made the wine that much better. Beyond the awesome food the location is great as you have an unobstructed view of the main square. We found the cost very reasonable given the quality and service we experienced. 'O Canonico 1898 is a must if you go...
Read moreTerrible experience. I was there with my boyfriend and as we walked in the owner/manager asked us if we had looked at the menu. I replied yes in Italian (which I speak) and he, seeming uncomfortable, tried to explain the very odd question by saying “some people think this is a pizzeria”. As we sat, he served us an appetizer and a glass of Prosecco as a “treat” (better said, trap). I tried to place the order of a dish, only for me since my boyfriend was sick in the stomach and did not want dinner, then the manager started yelling this could not happen, that he would not have served us the “treat” if he knew we were only ordering for one. I tried to ignore and order whatever else not to ruin or dinner but he refused and continued yelling saying we were not polite and not welcome We insisted on paying for the “treat”- which, oddly enough, he did not want and left only paying for the water. The place was half empty on a hot summer night in high season. No...
Read moreWorst customer service experience of my life! I wasn’t hungry but my friend wanted dinner and didn’t want to be alone so I went with her. She ordered a meal and a cocktail, I ordered a drink. The waiter told us we couldn’t only order one meal, we had to order more to make it worthwhile for them. Not sure if it is restaurant policy, but there were other tables free so we weren’t taking the spot from someone else. I offered to leave and asked if my friend could stay and have dinner, and he said no. Apparently they don’t serve just one person? This wasn’t made clear anywhere by signs or anything before we entered the restaurant. Completely discriminatory. Aside from that, he was being rude throughout the whole exchange, all in front of other tables nearby who heard everything. We were so embarrassed and ended up leaving, upset. Absolutely disgusting behaviour, if I could leave zero...
