A few steps from Rialto there is Ponte del Lovo (Wolf's Bridge). Premošćuje Rio de San Salvador. This is one of the smallest bridges in Venice. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful view towards the San Marco bell tower. Tradition teaches that it is the only one of the more than four hundred Venetian bridges from which it is possible to see the bell tower of San Marco. It is interesting what this bridge was named after. The name seems to derive from the name of the family that bore this name (the Lovo family), but in ancient times it was not difficult to find wolves all the way to the edge of the lagoon. At the time of Doge Vitale Michiel I, the area of Fusina, which borders the lagoon northwest of Venice and stretches towards the city through a long belt of land, was known as a place full of wolves. That belt of land was destroyed in 1339 to avoid possible enemy access to the city of Venice. In those years the surroundings of Venice were rich in game of various kinds so on the coast of Caorle nobles hunted wild boars, wolves, bears and chamois. Today the bridge is quite busy and the view of the narrow canal and the beautiful bell tower of San Marco is breathtaking. Though small in stature, this is one of the busier small bridges in Venice, thus the ample cafes nearby are ideal spots for people watching. Here we are can find the city's oldest pastry shop, Guanotto. If you are a spritzer enthusiast (of course you are), Guanotto is notable for being the beverage's birthplace, a mixture of bitters ( Aperol, Select, Cynar ), white wine ( prosecco ) and soda water - and finally it’s an incredibly delicious and refreshing...
Read moreAvoid this caffe at all costs! They are con artists. advertise drinks outside: 2.50 for a cappuccino and 3.50 for a hot chocolate. we go in, we sit down, we pay 14 euros for the same two drinks. i expect an added cost of 2 or 3 euros but not an extra 8 euros unadvertised simply for sitting down in their tiny, cramped little caffe. Later that evening at a different restaurant my partner and i had two main meals and two drinks for 25 euros - hardly equates does it. There are far better quality and far better in price in Venice! The fact they don't advertise these inflated sit-in prices in their menu just shows that they are trying to con those they think are tourists (we're not by the way we live here so we know better). oh and the hot chocolate came in some banged up plastic cup - and its the first place I have ever had to add sugar to it here in Italy. so all round terrible experience. Doesn't deserve a...
Read moreWent in to grab a quick pastry and a coffee to go and the girl at the register told us the coffees would have to be in a to go cup since they were closing soon so we said that was fine since it was 8:45pm and they closed at 9pm. We sat to eat a quick bite of the pastry while we were waiting for the 2 coffees to be made and Christina who was making us the coffees told us we couldn’t sit down and eat and had to leave even though it was only 8:45pm and the store was filled with other people sitting down and eating???? Made us get up & leave but let the other people stay? Never been treated so rudely by staff before. Definitely recommend people take their business elsewhere unless you want to be treated poorly by...
