Trattoria Bella Venezia — Restaurant in Venice

Zero Stars if i could! I would say run do not walk away from this restaurant! I was in Italy for over two weeks this summer and have traveled all over Europe and the United States and this was by far the worst experience i have ever had. On the menu they show fish for $7 euros, in the smallest font size i could only read with glasses, it states for 100 grams. We asked the owner/waiter 3 times in different ways, would 100 grams be enough of a portion of the fish to go along with the pasta we ordered as we did not know what a 100 grams of fish looked like. Three times he said yes, so we order two portions. When the fish came is was an entire fish, head, tail, etc., only missing the hook, disgusting if you ask me. Also all the bones were in place so we had to dibone the fish. When the bill came i almost jumped out of my skin, the owner/waiter had charged us not $7 euros for the fish but 4 times that amount or $28 euros for each fish. Instead of less than a $50 bill, i owed over $100 euro or almost $118 US, for two horrible fish, a small dish of spaghetti, small salad and two drinks- (Wine is usually only $5-6 euros each). When i asked the owner about the bill, all of a sudden he said he could never sell such a small piece of fish and all portions are usually 400 grams, or 4 times the price of what he originally told us. Why not just show $28 for the fish instead of playing all these games? I said ok it is a misunderstanding, he become instantly angry when i said i would pay $80 Euro. He said not his problem over and over again, and he would not allow us to leave and said would physically keep us there until we paid. He said we ordered and ate the fish and we have to pay for it. I said call the Police, so he said he did, but after 15 minutes no Police. Rather than ruin my vacation by this no class jerk, i paid the bill and left. After leaving i went on line and found other reviews that were exactly the same as mine regarding the fish 100 grams routine, where other poor souls got ripped off for even more. Regardless of the low reviews, my husband and I decided to stop and view their menu just out of curiosity. Immediately their "used car salesman" approached us trying to lure us into the establishment... We understand this is how businesses get tourists in, but it really annoyed my husband and I because we just wanted to look at the menu before deciding. I ignored the lady trying to talk us into going inside and talked right to my husband about eating there. We decided to try it anyways... we were seated and immediately my husband noticed, for the amount of people inside, only three tables had food... seemed as if the others were still waiting. I told my husband if we have to wait too long, we'll just try a different place. We got our drink orders in quite quick then decided on our meal options. Those were ordered not long after our drinks. Our drinks came out and we kept noticing waiters taking orders, but different people serving so we ended up getting served the wrong food twice. No biggie, but we then noticed the rest of the night a few others getting served wrong. My husband and I truly have nothing negative to say about our food. It was completely fine and came out hot! What we are complaining about is the €4 per person service charge, which we were unaware of. Two pasta dishes, one beer, and one glass of wine cost us €56.56 with the €8 add on charge... Never again will we go back. Their pasta wasn't any different than the other places we ate at and there's no reason for that service charge. Luckily as we walked out, the lady wasn't out front but we noticed a couple viewing their menu. I warned them of the service charge and they were quick to move along and said, "Oh really? Restaurant. We came here for food when we arrived after a late evening flight. Not many places open, so we were opportunistic as this place could sit us.

Initially, we were sat and served by a nice waiter. The food was very nice, good calamari starter, and pasta mains were fresh with good flavour.

BUT, manager seemed lazy, a young waitress (not sure if she was new, a language barrier, or just not very good) did something that shocked us. For example, she served the table behind us two meals, they immediately told her, those were not the emails they ordered, she left the meals on the table, informed the manager/owner who continued talking to the table he was serving in casual conversation for 5-10 mins, whilst the food was on the table, getting cold and sat in front of two customers who had not ordered those meals. The manager came over eventally, and said it was the table the other side of us, and put the same food straight onto their tables (this was despite it probably being cold, breathed on by strangers, and even had a bite taken out of it). We were appalled for the other paying customers.

To finish it off, we asked for the bill and to pay in card, we were told we could not pay with card despite seeing someone else pay with their card 5-10 mins earlier. Therefore I had to walk 5-10 mins to find an ATM to get cash out, and due to the extortionate fees and exchange rate of the ATM likely ended up paying 20% more for my meal than I would have had I been allowed to pay by cars.

Overall, I would not recommend. Poor treatment of...
