⭐️ 1 Star (only because zero isn’t an option) We are a Black family of four — parents with two well-behaved kids — and this was hands-down one of the most uncomfortable and insulting dining experiences we’ve ever had. We were seated at Beer Thirty and then completely ignored for over 30 minutes. No water, no server acknowledgment — nothing. Meanwhile, we watched tables around us, arrive after us and immediately receive warm greetings, drinks, and food orders.
We gave them the benefit of the doubt for a while, but after the second table was served and no one had even made eye contact with us, it became clear: we weren’t welcome. We sat there invisible while servers hovered around others — not once did anyone check in.
It felt humiliating, and our kids kept asking why no one was coming to help us. Try explaining to your child that sometimes people treat you differently because of the color of your skin. It’s 2025, and we’re still facing this kind of overt bias?
We eventually walked out, heads high, but deeply disappointed. This place may serve food and drinks, but they clearly don’t serve everyone. Beer Thirty, do better — or just be honest about who you actually want at...
Read moreLike every place I visited in Japan, the service is prompt, patient, and kind. Translate solves most language barriers, but pointing to an item and saying "this please" got me and my wife through ordering.
Also ngl they sell 1.5liter steins of Asahi Dry for 1500Y which, let's be real, beats the snot out of most places in North America I've visited... and may have positively influenced my review lol.
The food is excellently prepared and they've got a solid list of drinks. Had their steak frites, tried the fried shrimp, wife had the fish and chips, both enjoyed the meal enough to twice, bookending our stay in Kyoto. Great value for money, while we spent more on average, it'd be easy to keep the cost under 3000Y. If you're looking for a taste of Europe with a distinctly Japanese bent, hit...
Read moreA very nice underground bar, with friendly staff who do speak a suitable amount of English. Great location right next to the station too. All the food we ordered was great, and took about 10 minutes to get to us. Beef was tender with only one tiny small bit of gristle in a single piece, and the real wasabi added a great kick. All the sausages were good, I thought there might be one I wouldn't care for because I consider myself very picky, but no, they were all good. Same with the appetizer platter, although strangely that was the most expensive thing we ordered. Probably one of the best restaurants I've been to in my three days in Kyoto, it certainly has the friendliest staff, especially to forginers. Just remember to push the button when you want your...
