Daiki-suisan kaitenzushi Shinkyogoku — Restaurant in Kyoto

I came to this sushi place with a friend after she recommended it. I had heard about it many times before but this was the first time I visited. I often go to cheaper conveyer belt sushi places, so I wasn’t used to the higher price point, but I ended up really enjoying it!

The price was definitely higher than the typical conveyer belt sushi place, but I found the fish to be very tasty! I ordered mix of cheaper options and more expensive options. My personal favorite was the salmon with cheese on top. You really can’t go wrong with any of the sushi here! Everything was delicious and prepared to order in front of us. The staff were attentive as well, and made sure we were satisfied.

You can order from a tablet which is available in English if needed, or you can take plates from the conveyer. My friend and I mostly ordered through the device since the sushi was freshly prepared.

We came on a Thursday evening and there were very few people inside, so the atmosphere was nice and quiet. All customers were tourists, but that’s not surprising for the area.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend and we tried to visit it one evening around 9pm. Two families, 4 adults and 3 kids.

Upon opening the door to ask whether they had any availability, I was "welcomed" by a very aggressive waitress who did not greet me and, instead, pushed me out, urging me to put my name on a waiting list. I stopped on the door and asked her whether I could hope to get a table for 7. She answered No, no way. We could only hope to get counter seats. 7 people, with kids, waiting for counter seats?

The lady showed no interest in us, she was extremely rude and that was my worst experience in Japan, a country where service is, on average, outstanding and incredibly nice.

I was not unhappy not to eat in a place employing such a waitress, as the atmosphere of a restaurant is as important as the food itself and this place sent me very bad vibes.

My family and I used to come here because of the quality of the food. However, with the arrival of a new manager, the atmosphere of the place has changed completely, unfortunately for the worse.

While we were choosing what to order, my 6-year-old daughter was distracted by watching YouTube when the manager arrived and rudely informed her that she should put her phone on silent. I am a person who is averse to noise, and I know that the volume was not high. Even more strange was seeing the aforementioned woman bragging loudly to her colleagues behind the counter.

The worst part is feeling helpless because we don't speak the language very well. I guarantee that if we were Japanese, the situation would have been different.

It's sad to see such a good restaurant ruined by management like that.
